I started checking for broken eggs several decades ago. Had 4 with my breakfast this morning.

I guess I've always checked em over.
A habit picked up from my folks.
The last few decades, I not only open
the carton, I take each egg out and
look it over carefully. The smart people
at the egg distributors have learned to
put the cracks on the bottom side for
people that just open the lid.
Kinda like my daddy taught me about
buying a sack of potatoes, and watching
for sellers that "stovepipe " them.

I’ve been checking eggs for years and covering my face with my shirt when someone coughs or sneezes around me and avoid that area long before the bs mask mandates. Common sense...

Since I do the shopping now..I check any carton that I intend to buy..  I learned that from my wife.

One grandson buys duck eggs from a local flock owner.  He says they are about the same price per dozen, and one
duck egg replaces two chicken eggs.

Many folks buy from family flock keepers..normally more flavorful than the supermarket types.

I check for cracked eggs, not worried about getting a rotten egg , but if it is cracked and what seeps out dries, you not get that egg out without breaking it, or removing all the other eggs and soaking the carton in warm water.
Soaking is not bad if it is a styrofoam container but it ruins paper ones which I save for my cousins farm eggs; do not like styrofoam just because I do not like them. 8)

Can any of you do the one hand egg break and pour into pan most of the TV cooks can do?
I cannot do that; with store eggs I smash the shell too hard and get shell pieces in batter; with farm eggs hard shells, I have to hit them so hard the shell breaks the yoke which I loathe for frying sunny side up.

It's not so much of getting a stuck
egg from the carton, it's that an
egg with a crack or nick in the shell
doesn't last half as long as an egg
with an unblemished shell.
Some ( many) eggs at the store have
nearly indistinguishable cracks that
look like faint pencil lines on the
shell. Those are compromised and
won't last as long as an egg with a
perfectly unblemished shell

There are local farms around who sell eggs at the door. Some years ago my brother's joker friend Don, decided to buy some eggs from his neighbor down the road..his conversation went like this.

DON  Do you have any eggs to sell?

Farmer: Yes we have some regularly.

Don: How much do they cost?

Farmer: They are a dollar a dozen..cracked ones are 50 cents.

Don: Sounds fair..how about cracking me a couple dozen ?
