Skipper you can keep those down there!!!!!! I have enough problems with snakes, snapping turtles and bobcats right now.  While I haven't seen any mountainlions I have heard they are around too.  But crocks no way not me.                                                                    BigBill

Did you make new boots for yourself or a handbag for the misses?  I guess shore fishing isn't safe there?? In the dark??  I don't like it when I'm on the menu!!!

I would never want to shore fish on Okeechobee.

Its hard to explain, but there's basically no shore on the lake to fish from aside from a few jetties or canals.  The shore itself is actually the levee around the lake.  Out from it is about 2 miles of standing grass in anywhere from 6" of water to 4 feet.  You'd have to wade out there a ways with the snakes and lizards.  No thanks, I'll stick to fishing from a boat.

Snakes are the worst.  One day I'm fishing from shore sitting on a large rock and I caught a painted turtle we were panfishing with worms.  When i reeled it close to me a snake came out from under the rock to attack the turtle.  My reaction was so quick I hit it in the head with my rod tip and knocked it out and tossed it in the water and I figured it would leave us alone so i thought.  When it came to it was on the attack again. I smacked it really hard again and tossed it back in the water as it went down for the count it was shaking I figured I had killed it.  But it came to again and attacked again and when I went to hit it again it veerred up its head and opened its mouth to bite me that was it i lost it I threw it up on the shore and smashed it with a rock dead.  It was a smaller one but i have seen others that are about 5' long and 2" round in diameter these bigger ones just seem to go away while the smaller ones are nasty.  I HATE SNAKES!!!!

One day I was watching a little snake swimming across the lilly pads while a small bass was try many times to strike at it and missed.  After I seen this I found some "snake bait" on clearance at a local tackle shop.  They look just like little snakes and i have tried them with no success yet but you never know.

When I was loggin with my truck full I would find large snakes in the road sunning themselves if I ran them over they would live if I locked up the dual rear wheels(ebrake) over them it would rip them open and make them road pizza.

For many years my tube was part of my bass boat.  When not fishing a tournament, I often hop in the tube and get back into the spots I can't get to in the boat.  Most of my fishing is in Texas, louisiana and Mississippi.  Gators are common in all of these states.  I never had a problem with a gator, I have "been wise" several times a got out of the water when I encountered a 8-10 foot gator.  You never know what they may do.  snakes are a different story.  I have worn out several good flipping (dabbling) rods beating snakes off.  I have had them try to get in the tube with me.  Have pulled up the stringer to add a fish and found a big old snake hanging on to one that was on the stringer. (thats why most tube fishermen use baskets, but heck, they get hung up in the brush and restrict your movement.)

Piece of advice.  If you do much tube fishing is snake/gator country, then find a good friend to fish with.  Look out for each other's back and try to stay close together.  As an added bit of security, drill a hole in a long broom handle, tie a stout cord to it and let it float along behind you.  It's great for beating snakes.  Of course, if its legal, a .22 with rat shot is great too.

I don't do much tube fishing anymore, but I still have some fond memories.

I've seen 4' diameter snapping turtles here with a human sized head I hooked it once and it stuck its head up and just spit out my hook. At first my son said it looked like it was a log I was turning over in the water that my line has snagged until it stuck its head up.  I landed another one the size of the tire on my wifes wrangler and it was pissed but it bit again and i landed it again it was clawing the bottom all the way in stupid bold turtle. There are big beavers here too since there are no trappers here anymore. The last one ran across the road we were fishing from dragging my sons rod & reel in the water with it.   Lucky enough it had a bobber in the water so we snagged the line and got it back he was lucky it didn't tangle up on the beaver.  The things we put up with to go bass fishing but these smaller spots are so hot with good sized bass mainly because there not heavily fished plus most don't throw the right baits too.     BigBill

I still hate the water snakes the worst they just don't give up.   One of the guys I fish with has had encounters with bears twice but he won't walk in the woods in the dark to fish anymore.  I have seen mountainlions in Vermont and have heard they are here too but I haven't seen them yet. I have been almost nose to nose with a bobcat one night at dusk too.  In Ct. while there is still some woods but its mainly populated the wild animals are making a comeback.  I do have a consealed carry permit(gun permit) but I hate to start carrying again but it may come to that when I start fishing early in the am when its still dark you just never know what animal I'm going to see next?  Lots of weird stuff goes on when we are sleeping they own the night.
