choke for rem 870 slugs?
« on: December 28, 2003, 11:55:32 AM »
What size choke do I need to shoot slugs from my 870? Til now I've only used it for turkey hunting and thought I would try it on some deer< and I really don't want to get hurt while doing it.

You can shoot foster type, typically called rifled slugs, through any choke except the extra full or special turkey full . However, manufacturers recommend using Improved cylinder.  Probably more important than your choke though would be what you have for sights on your barrel.  Its almost impossible to get any real accuracy when you only have the bead on the end of your barrel to sight with. Remington makes both smooth bore and rifled barrels with rifle sights as well as scope mounts for the 870. If you will be doing a lot of deer hunting you might want to look into getting one of these.
Hope this helps;

Thanks for the info Tony. I have rifle sights on the gun. I have just using my muzzle loader and thought I would give the 870 a try.  We have a non-qouta doe hunt coming up and  hopefully I can get atleast 2 before the season ends.
Thanks again!! :D

On a smoothbore with interchangable chokes, I'd opt for the extended rifled choke, then test which slug gives best 50 yard accuracy.  I've found that Federal Sabot slugs do well, as does the Fiocchi AeroSlug.  Your mileage may vary.

I just got thru doing some testing with two shotguns, one a winchester 1200  12 gaugewith a cylinder barrel and the other a remington 870 in 20 gauge. Both have red dot sights, the 870 a BSA and the 12 gauge a Millet SP1 .  Now I though slugs were supposed to be not so accurate. The 870 has an improved cylinder remchoke in it's 20 inch barrel and this gun is a tackdriver. With remington sluggers 2 3/4 inch loads sub 2 inch groups are the norm at fifty yards hitting the previous slugs hole isn't hard at all.  With Brenneke slugs the groups open up to three shots barely touching, still plenty good for deer hunting.  The 12 gauge only got tested with foster type slugs because I felt there was plenty of performance there to start with.so using either remington sluggers or winchester rifled slugs I could cut tight cloverleaf groups till I got tired of being flexed by recoil.  The millet red dot sight was easier for me to shoot well because of it's smaller dot size.  The winchester slugs shot a bit higher than the remingtons  but close enough I can use either one.
