Testing the .357 maximum
« on: March 24, 2004, 12:18:38 AM »
Yesterday, I tested 19.3 grains of H4227 with the bullet seated at the second cannelure.
Very good groups! One 4 shot group at .65 ", and two other shots at .5" .
The overall group 6 shots = 1.68" at 50 yards. This round is showing some promise.
I'm not sure about increasing the charge anymore because the Hornaday data states that the max FPS for the 180 XPT is up to 1750. And based on load data, 19.3 gives 1,450 fps from a 14" Contender, so I'm sure I'm pushing it around 1600 with the 22 inch barrel NEF.

21.0 gr of IMR4227 gives me 1460 fps with the 180 XTP out of a 10" Contender.  This is actual MV over my chronograph.  I'm loading 21 gr 296 for 1600 fps.

Since I don't have a Hornady manual.
Does anyone have load data for the Hornady 180 SSPB in the max.

IMR 4227    19.5 grains
CCI SMALL RIFLE  400
180 XTP/HP    .357 DIA     HORNADY
2.015  O.A.L

VERY,VERY  accurate   load    1/4 inch at 50     1 inch at 100

IMR 4227    20.0 GRAINS
CCI SMALL RIFLE  400
180 SSPB      .358 DIA     HORNADY
2.290  O.A.L

equally as  accurate ,
little more speed due to  spire point

Have several  loads ,  but on average , higher charge is less accurate from what I've seen.

I shoot a 10 inch barrel, but I'm not sure of speed though.
