Thought the Encore would have less recoil
« on: March 12, 2004, 08:22:55 AM »
I own several Contender Carbine barrels, love them.  I also own a TCR-83, the one with set triggers.  I have 7MM Mag, .338 Mag, 30-06, .243, 22.250, and 12ga with 3 1/2" Chamber.  The .338 and 3 1/2" 12 ga are a bit tough to shoot due to heavy recoil in this light gun.  A year ago my wife and son gave me an Encore with .50cal Muzzleloading barrel.  I shoot three Pyrodex pellets, and love it.  This Christmas they gave me a 30-06 barrel.  I took it to the range yesterday.  I was shooting 125 gr Speer TNTs, in front of 53 grains of IMR-3031, in my NEF Handi.  This is a sweet shooting load in the light Handi, it really reaches out there and recoil is negliable.  I got the Encore out and tried a couple of shots from my varmit rest.  Boy does that thing kick.  I'm not looking forward to shooting 180s in it.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The 1st thing I would do is get a Sims recoil pad, that is made for the Encore (around $25.00).  I am thinking that you have their synthetic stock on it.  I got the same muzzleloader and then got a 7m-08 24" barrel for it.  I too was surprised at the kick even from this lighter recoiling caliber.  But the Sims recoil pad made a hugh difference.

My brother and I are both small framed and I only go a buck and a quarter. He was sighting in his encore 20gauge with rifled barrel and asked me to shoot it. Damn was I suprised after the first shot, sucker felt like a mule kicked me and it only got worse - good news was first 3 shots were all touching at 50 yards. hell I'll take my 3.5 inch citori satin hunter over an encore any day as far as recoil goes.

Yep, I learned not to walk up behind a kicking horse or get behind an encore with nothing but a T shirt between me & that thin synthetic stock.  I think my 209 x 50 kicked harder than my ole Hawken with its brass butt plate.  When I ordered my 7 08 barrel I got a 24'' heavy barrel.  It still kicked.  So I whittled out a thumb hole stock and forearm for it and put a Sims pad on it.  At nine and a half pounds the kicker has been tamed.  I'm just glad I didn't get an 06 or 300 mag. I put a pict of my stock titled "Built my own encore stock" in the forum a month or so ago.
Good luck

I always thought the Encore was very comfortable to shoot. My 350 Rem mag barrel doesn't bother me at all. Sean

You can go to their web site and do a search for dealers. They don't sell
retail themselves. They do have pre fit pads for the synthetic Encore
stocks, but not the wood stocks. I had to get the cut down version, and
had to get it from my local Gander Mountain.  Believe you me, it was
worth even having to sand down one for the wood stock. What a
recoil difference!!!  I just completed putting a mercury recoil reducer in
the stock, too. Can't wait to try it out now with the heavier ML bullets!!!
