Remington 7400 and mil-surp ammo?
« on: July 10, 2004, 10:08:45 AM »
I've got a few hundred rounds of mil-surp (Hirtenburg) ammo and I need a rifle to shoot it with. Isn't that a good reason to buy a new rifle or any gun for that matter? Will the 7400 handle mil-surp ammo w/o a lot of jams and such?

Well, I tried to use some German surplus ammo in a Remington Model 7400 in the early 1990s. The Remington pulled through the rims. This ammo cycled through both my M1A and FN-FAL with no problems. Thus, I returned the rifle to Remington with a letter, they checked out the rifle and ascertained it was fine. The 7400 never worked with that ammo, but PMC, US military surplus and all commercial brands functioned the firearm flawlessly. So...I would suggest that if you want to shoot mil surp in a rifle, try it in that rifle first or get a military surp style rifle.

Targshooter:

I noticed that my Remington 742's would rip rims if I was using a powder that had a slow burn rate.  Possibly that was the problem with the stuff you used.
