Most studious Christians prefer to call Easter, resurrection day, primarily because "Easter" is associated with pagan terms. The venerable Bede, claimed that the term came from the old English, "Eostre", Anglo Saxon pagan goddess of sex and fertility.
Perhaps she was a later example of "Ishtar" ancient Mesopotamian goddess of the same genre. Hence the hints of fertility remaining today, such as rabbits and eggs.
In any case, of the numerous miracles and messages sent at the time of our Lord's crucifixion, perhaps the one which moves me most,
is the tearing of the veil..dividing the people from the Holy of Holies..where God dwelt.
It was a graphic announcement of the New Covenant (Matt 27:45-54) Prior to this time, the only one who could approach God, was
the high priest, and that only once per year.
Best research today places the dimensions of 30 ft high, 60 ft long and 4 inches thick..colored blue, crimson and purple..
Some speculate...red on one side (His blood), blue on the other (Diety) , blending to purple (Royalty, King of Kings) in the middle.
..But that is speculation..nothing more.
As Jesus uttered his last words and gave up the ghost, that massive veil tore from top to bottom. Top to bottom, proving that no man did that..but God Himself tore it from above.
That tearing of the veil demonstrated that we no longer need any mediator between us and God..no man between us and our God.
..Just our only advocate, Jesus Christ Himself !
What a relief.. intermediary needed..we can go directly to God through prayer..asking forgiveness, bonding closer and communing with Him.
We can "boldly approach" His throne of grace..(Hebrews 4:16) No more hierarchy needed to speak to God Himself.
Thus, we can build upon our "personal relationship' with Jesus.
I will be giving a short dissertation on this theme on Good Friday.. hopefully, it will stir hope and joy in hearts.
