I think it's pretty clear that it was the "handi work" of methane gas, and inadequate ventilation, in a very large dairy.

A study was done back in the 1980's that said enough natural gas from dairy farms and feed stalls could supply all the residential natural gas in this country.  Problem was the gas would cost twice as much as drilling for it.  That is a lot of gas produced by cows.

Some of the dairies in the Texas Panhandle sell their methane gas to California, and transfer it via pipeline.

When I worked with the Harvestore corp., we built slurry tanks with roofs.  they caught the gas and used it tom power their farm.

  The reason I was caught by surprise is, I couldn't quite believe any farmer would allow such a gas buildup, without having long before done something constructive about it!
