Remington 6.8x43mm
« on: January 08, 2004, 10:33:48 AM »
I posted the following in "Bolt Rifles", but it is more appropriate here (at least till Remington offers a bolt gun in this cartridge)
___________________________________________
Remington brings out a new cartridge, and has not even chosen a rifle to chamber it in! A shortened 30 Rem case (at 43mm, shorter than a 223), built to apparently fit the mag of an AR-15 style rifle. Below is SSK's blurb on the cartridge. Normal rifle barrel should achieve 2800+fps.

6.8 REM SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge)

Be the first on your block to get one. SSK chambers Contender, Encore, bolt actions and Ar-15 units for this new cartridge and is accepting orders now.

The 6.8 used 270 caliber (.277”) diameter bullets. Nominal bullet weight is 115 grains for a velocity of 2650 from a 16.5” barrel.

The cartridge was originally a military development and cartridge head size is identical with the 30 Remington. Its purpose is to provide better wound capabilities than the 5.56. At this time its future in the military arena is uncertain. Its future in the civilian arena is assured. I consider it an accurate, light recoiling, 300 yard deer cartridge provided the right bullets are used.

Interestingly the ballistics are mirror images of the 270 JDJ which has been available in Contenders for over two decades. Our experience with that cartridge has always been favorable.

Yea I would love to see a Remington Model Seven SS chambered in the 6.8 Rem.
A few years ago I hunted with a Ruger Ultralight in .250 Savage and shot  the 117 Hornady RN at around 2,600 fps and it worked great on Whitetails out to 200 yards. I sold this gun long ago. But it was the best gun - cartridge combination I have ever used for all around deer hunting at short to medium range.
The 6.8 should get around 2,750 fps out of a 20" Model Seven with a .270 caliber 115 gr. bullet that should be just what I need out to 250 yards.
