Any hints on wearing Spurs??
« on: February 24, 2004, 05:42:03 AM »
Getting my first pair (since childhood)  Any hints to keep me from falling on my dignity?  Always felt life is too short to make all the mistakes yourself so not above asking for ideas/suggestions.

Sure.  Walk with your feet a little further apart than you normally would.

Did you really thing that cowboys walk bow legged because they spent too long with a horse between their knees? :)

I do a lot of riding so I wear sputs pretty often.  You get used to them being there pretty quick and then you shouldn't have much trouble tripping over them.

Good luck!

OK, that all makes sense,

but....

both are real tight on my boots to the point of being painful, so what's a good way to "open-up" the spur?  Put one side in a vice and pull out on the other???

Curious minds (and big feet) what to know

Turns out that while this forum was down my club's pards set me straight.  I put them in a vice and wacked away (a scientific term, by the way) with my rubber mallet.  Opened to 9 cm at the front (can't find my other ruler).  Will try this and adjust as necessary.

One other thing is you might want to leave off any tiedowns[chains or straps that go under the boot] so that if you do hang up a spur it can ride up on your boot rather than trip you.

I got a kick out of this one.  I'm new to SASS, but have been around guns, hunting, ranching and spurs all my life.
I have a pair of boots that the spurs just stay on.  I put them on when I head to the barn to saddle every morning.
I put on my spurs right after I put on my pants.
Horses and mules take me away from the mess of mankind and into the beautiful country.

Just don't do like an acquaintance of mine did.

He warmed his backside over a small fire, forgetting that he had his spurs on.

He then turned around and squatted down to warm his hands and upper front.

By the way, he was dressed for a living history event -- in leggings and a breechclout at the time.

He has the cutest little V on each cheek.
