Irish Music
« on: March 08, 2023, 07:02:26 AM »
I am listening to the Music Channels on cable and have the Sounds of the Seaso on; as the title says they are playing Irish Music for St. Patrick's day.

One does not realize , except for the few you used to hear on  general radio stations as a youth, such as Danny Boy, what music from other parts of the world really amount to unless you listen to it in a steady state such as this channel is playing.

Although, there are the, squeeze box, Irish Pub type songs, the sad love songs, and the off to war, sad or rally, type songs which differ greatly.

Danny Boy always brings a tear top my eye.  My son Danny died young, so the words bring some pain.

..But knowing he is safe in Christ..I have the solid hope that I will see him again.

I am surrounded by Irish music. There is sheet music for Raglan Road at my elbow. Lots of good recordings and performances available on YouTube. My favorite of all is Inisheer. Three versions:

I like Danny Boy unless it's Conway Twitty's version. Talk about butchering a song. This is a perfect example.

Went to Ireland back in 2008. It was some real fun throwing back a pint, listening to some good authentic pub jams. Players would drift in and out, sit in for a bit (seems most knew each other), then head out to a different pub. Someone else would take their seat. Nice atmosphere.

Conway didn't have the voice for Danny Boy, but this guy did.

Oh my, you just took me back 65 years, I used to hear his songs very often when I was a small boy.
I have not read or heard his name in many decades.
The Church organ, you do not hear that any more either.
Very sweet and yet nostalgically sad.
Thank you.   8)

Oh, my heart mellows when I hear the Irish brougue in "When You Were Sweet Sixteen"..  It holds a special place inmy heart, since I first met my late wife when she was sixteen, in circumstances much as the song describes.  The young lady in the video also evokes memories of her... A touch of
red in her hair and a splash of freckles across the bridge of her pert, turned up nose..

Here done so well.. Finbar sings..    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiWJWJ2nLH4

I thank the Lord that I will be with her soon,...for eternity..
