Wads - What are they for?
« on: March 22, 2004, 01:04:39 PM »
I'm still putting the bits and pieces together to shoot my new Encore.  I am planning to shoot sabots and was wondering what the purpose of a wad was and what it exactly it does?  Do I need them to shoot sabots?

As in "Wonder Wad" / "Bore Button"? To cushion the bullet-- no, you don't need them for sabots.

Yep.  If not used for sabots, then for conicals?  I understand the purpose of wads with buckshot in shotgun shells but am not clear on why a solid projectile would need "cushioned".  Does the wad/button cushion the bullet during the loading sequence when applying pressure with the ramrod?

My apologies if this is a remedial question but I've never had it explained to me.

It can help protect the base of soft lead projectiles from flame-cutting-- some conical shooters report better accuracy with them.

As a side note, my dog greedily devoured a little stack of pre-lubed "all natural" wonder wads-- and reproduced them in a spectacular fashion a few moments later.

In the "natural" way.
