Although the Battle of Gettysburg is often considered the "high point of the Confederacy", both militarily and geographically, there is another note to be made.
While Gettysburg was a major battle, and likely deserves the title, St Albans Vermont should be noted.
It seems a rag-tag group of conspirators hoped they could save the Confederacy, by robbing a couple rural banks in the north. They apparently did
their planning in Canada, before attamptiung their raid..
The principal actors were rounded up by a posse shortly after the raid, and most of the cash recovered. Ironically, with this failed raid, along with
the fact that Gen Sheridan had just defeated Gen Jubal Early in Virginia...likely helped to shortly propel lincoln into the presidency.
It seems it was somewhat of a 'Keystone Cops' show, in the end. Of course, it was highly unlikely that 2-3 banks in rural Vermont of the time
would have enough cash to help the Confederacy... but hats off to their planning and their elan in the execution of that plan !
