Is it just me?
« on: November 28, 2023, 04:24:59 AM »
I can't seem to buy a meat product that tastes worth a dam anymore. Jimmy Dean sausage doesn't taste like it did. The cost of it and bacon has nearly doubled, and the quality of taste has gone south. Even so called quality meat cuts are anything but quality it seems. They push the sale of grass fed beef instead of grain finished, and it's not even close IMO. But the cost is even more. :o According to my taste buds, they have even found a way to make ground beef taste like it's actually not beef. Perhaps they have sneaked the bugs into our meat supply already. Or is it just me?

LOL, well all kiddin aside, my tastes in meat have actually changed in the last 2 or 3 years. At 74 things I liked I no longer like, and things I wouldn't eat I like.
Hamburger I no longer care for, tenderloin I detest, and a good smoked brisket I like, if I smoke myself.
I buy complete ribeye rolls vacuum packed, and age them 35 to 40 days in the refrigerator before I open them and cut them into steaks. Those I like.
The Jimmie Dean regular sausage I still eat, but ham of any kind has lost its appeal, and I like the vegetables as much as meat, sometimes more  so.

I'd have to say I haven't noticed anything like that, meat here seems just fine. What I have noticed is that the eggs Thriftway here carries make really bad hard boiled eggs. Had to start driving to town (17 miles) to get decent eggs.

While I must admit my tastes in food, especially in meat..is not epicurean, I believe the best meat can be found through direct purchase.

Before my wife passed and between the two of us we ate a bit more meat, we would buy direct from the farmer.  Our taste in beef, went to Scottish
Highlander cattle, raised on roughage, so we would buy a quarter of beef from a local producer as needed.

Other foods from locals, where convenient.  Now, I eat little meat, and when I do..i don't much care what it is..

I think it's a change mostly in me. Like you, I tend to like veggies more and meat less. I do believe the quality has gone down some as well. At one time, I really liked Jimmy Dean regular sausage. Not so much now. The only way I really enjoy chicken now is grilled, or in Chinese food. Same with Hamburger or steak. I guess It's the smokey taste I still enjoy.

Since I lost my wife back in September, and once again began doing the cooking, the taste of food has really changed. And dam sure not for the better! ???

Being an old chicken farmer, I found that fresh eggs do not do as well boiled as older eggs do.As an egg ages, the inner membrane is less likely to bond to the egg white, so the shell peels off easier.

The eggs you bought at Thriftway were prob. much fresher. Let them sit in the fridge for an extra week or so before boiling them.

Sadly, i am not a veggie fan either.. :D  My taste runs toward bread & Chees..so I have to watch my intake.  Veggies?  I know the old bod requires them, so I mainly I get them by way of bags of frozen veggies, like California medley etc.

I just use part of a bag each time..usually by quarters..run through the microwave.  Frozen works good for me, since being alone, things can go bad quickly.

   ..And don't neglect hydration....

This for sure, appetite changes.  "

Try soaking your chicken in Italian dressing overnight and grill it. Also soaking in saltwater makes it more tender, don’t forget to rinse it unless you really like it salty. I buy the cheap zesty Italian from Aldi’s just for chicken and pork. Don’t knock it until you try it :). Also I do one or the other not both.

  My diet is reinforced in other ways;

We have dinners at church for various reasons, usually 2-3 per week..at Bible stiudies, small samplings after prayer groups, and the once-a-month
time when our church holds a free meal for anyone in the community who wants to attend.

Well, it seems some of the ladies like to make sure this old man does not go hungry, so some very tasty dishes are "forced" upon me, at regular intervals..  ;) :D

As a kid, we ate a lot of stuff
like my parents ate - sweet potatoes,
cabbage, greens, beans and peas
and cornbread and such
That's what they had because
that's what they could raise with
a little work. They didn't have any
grocery stores and didn't have
any money even if there had been
one across the road.
After I grew up I was mostly eating
at various places and the roach
coach during work, but these last
few decades I've got back to cooking
the old timey stuff and trying to grow
as much of it as I can. Except for sweet
potatoes. Never did get back to liking
those at all. Probably never will.
A friend's mom is from russia, and
she accidentally/inadvertently got
me back to enjoying kraut. I helped
my granny cut up several mountain's
worth of cabbage for kraut as a
youngster. I never quit liking fresh
tomatoes right from the plant.
There's a world of difference between
garden fresh and store bought
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Thanks, I was figuring just the opposite. Even though they are cheaper in town, it costs more for the 35 mile round trip than the 2 mile round trip to TW. I'll try your suggestion.

Best way to hard boil eggs is to steam them. the shells come off very easy. I throw six jumbo eggs in a steamer pot. Steam for 16 minutes. Then right away put them in ice water for 15 minutes. Adjust time for smaller eggs. 14-15 minutes would do for medium eggs.  Lots of ways you hear about boiling eggs so the shells come off easy, but Steaming them then ice water is the best.

Buy a meat grinder.  We take cheap on sale chuck roasts and grind them into hamburger.  We bought some brisket recently for $1.59 a lb. and made it into hamburger.  Once you make your own hamburger, it tastes so so much better than store hamburger.

They once made most hamburger out of old milk cows that didn't produce as much milk.  That is what made hamburger cheap.  A lot of people today are buying soy, almond, and oat milk substitutes.  Cream from real milk is made into ice cream, thus the push for 1% or 2% milk to have more cream to sell separately.

Anyway, they say cow farts cause global warming, so they are really pushing alternatives for beef and milk products.  Grass fed beef don't really taste as good, but cows don't fart as much eating grass.  Cows produce as much methane in their gas and manure in feed stalls and dairy farms to supply all the natural gas needed for all the gas homes in America.  But it costs twice as much as drilling to get all the gas out of the manure.  It has to be scooped up and put in a pool with a cover over it to go through the heat cycle and trap all the gas in the dome over it.  Then filter and compress it and pump it into the natural gas system.  Farts are mostly methane, and natural gas is 95% or more pure methane.  Don't say anything to a liberal, or they will mandate trapping all this gas and using it instead of drilling.  Oh, methane when released gets into the upper atmosphere and traps heat, thus contributing to global warming.  Man, the dinosaurs, being much larger, must have put out a lot of methane and the earth was once really hot during their day.

Back to meat prices.  Guy at work gets spring weaned calves, lets them pasture all summer, feeds them hay in the next winter, then pastures them another summer, then fattens them up with corn for a couple of weeks, then has them slaughtered.  Gets a lot of beef and only has to buy hay for one winter, plus some corn.  You only need about an acre minimum, east of the Mississippi, and you could raise your own.

The globalists want you to stop eating beef, then stop eating other meat, and eventually become vegetarians, to help stop global warming.
They want you to drive electric cars.
They want you to live in small all-electric homes using heat pumps and be dependent on the grid.
They want all electricity to be produced with windmills and solar panels, no gas, no coal, no nuclear power, and no damming of rivers for hydro power.
They want to stop strip mining for lithium, and other minerals needed.
They have no plan as to how to fix the grid, have giant battery banks for the wind and solar power, how to make things without mining or smelting of metals.
They want to decrease the population, but where are they going to get future workers that can pay the taxes needed to support the retired elderly.
They want to blame all the problems on the white man and western civilization.

Off my soap box, raise your own chickens, cows, hogs, rabbits, or something to have some meat, eggs, and milk.  Raise your own garden.  One or two acres of wheat can provide a family with bread for a year.  But, you have to harvest it, thresh it, and grind it into flour.  No matter what alternative, it is going to take work.

Used to buy pork butts/shoulder for a buck a pound, can’t hardly find them for less than $2 a # now.
