Remington announced on Monday that it will relocate its global headquarters to the Georgia city of LaGrange and open a manufacturing plant and research center to design and produce the company’s guns, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said that the nation’s oldest firearms manufacturer, dating back to 1816, intends to spend $100 million and create about 850 jobs in Troup County over the next five years.

“Georgia’s firearms industry is responsible for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of investment in our communities,” Kemp said in a statement, The Lagrange Daily News reported. “I am a proud owner of some of Remington’s first-class products, and now, I am excited to welcome them to their new home in the Peach State."

The company, which is currently based in Ilion, New York, said in a statement that several of its “strategic products” will be made in Georgia, though it is not immediately known which ones, according to the Journal-Constitution.

In recent years, even as gun sales in general sharply increased during the coronavirus pandemic and over concerns about new firearms restrictions, Remington descended into financial turmoil, having twice filed for bankruptcy since 2018.

Remington has also faced other problems, as it has been targeted with dozens of lawsuits over certain bolt-action rifle and shotgun models that had design defects, as well as coming under intense financial and political pressure after the gunman in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, used a Remington-made rifle to kill 20 children and six adults.

Due to its difficulty in regaining its financial footing, Remington was broken up and sold to seven different firms in a late 2020 auction. Remington Firearms is the portion of the firm relocating to Georgia.

Remington joined a trend of many firearms manufacturers having recently left the Northeast for more politically hospitable environments in the South.

Remington Chief Executive Ken D’Arcy said Georgia’s pro-gun atmosphere was key in the decision to relocate, stating that Georgia  “not only welcomes business, but enthusiastically supports and welcomes companies in the firearms industry.”

Of course, that was a couple years ago, but still one can hardly blame them for moving !  No sense hanging around where the state politicians are
nothing but hostile !  Most corporations won't hang around where they are not appreciated.

Stinking left doesn't know the meaning of "gratitude".  Here is a company that has provioded the state of New York with hundreds ..or rather
thousands of jobs and prosperity since 1816..and the stupid, political parasites in Albany, treat them shabbily..

When I read about industry's like this moving, can't help but wonder. Between Newsom in Ca., and Hochul in NY., are they that far out of touch, that stupid, or doing what they do on purpose? I know Ruger moved a big part of their company to Arizona, maybe all of it by now. I believe S&W moved to Tn., not to long ago. If these governors think that the fed's will help bail them out some more, they might be in for a surprise.

I guess we should not wonder what they think...so much as IF they think at all...  Or do they, like robots, just follow the orders

Hopefully they'll leave all
those indifferent apathetic
sandbaggers in Ilion and
get some people that are
happy to work and have
a job and have some pride
in workmanship

And from what I read, had quite a few problems with quality control. Hope the move helps.

They're probably not the total blame, but
I can say for sure that they didn't really
put forth any honest effort towards making
quality Marlin lever actions or H&R Handi
rifles either one.
I have an old post somewhere ( maybe
on the old GBO) about a new Ilion
Handi Rifle I bought that had the rifling
in the barrel zig-zag, that is to say a
couple of inches of right hand rifling,
then abruptly turn to the left for a few
inches, then back to the right,  etc. etc.
NO REAL PROFESSIONAL  would ever
turn out a steaming pile of poop like
that, and no qualified professional
Q.C. inspector would let something
like that out of the door.
That's just indifference and apathy
and/or sabotage
IMO I think they probably felt that
making an inexpensive single shot
break action was beneath them
or something like that.
A friend had a Remlin Marlin from
Ilion that was plagued with misbuilt
messes
There's oodles of yoofloob videos
about the crap Marlins that Ilion
Remington built. Not sure about
any of H&R's.
I know of that mess personally.

Doesn't really matter now.
There won't be a Remington in
Ilion New York anymore

Used to be a former H&R employee
on the old GBO that could probably
shed more light on it than anybody.

Any curiosities can be helped along
with any of the yoofloob videos about
the Remington produced Marlins

Only one I can think of at the moment
is "death of the Marlin levergun"

It appears that any downgrade in the Marlin and H&R production, may have been remington's fault, since the manufacture of those brands were moved to both NY and Kentucky, and produced the same problems.

Perhaps Remington did not take the Marlin or H&R craftsmen with them, which could very well cause quality control to plummet.

Don't forget, 1n 2007, Cerberus capital management bought out Remington...and we all know what happens when a  bunch of "bean counters"
take over any company..  Remington itself also failed..

Marlin Firearms Co. is an American manufacturer of semi-automatic, lever-action, and bolt-action rifles. In the past, the company, now based in Madison, North Carolina, and formerly based in North Haven, Connecticut, made shotguns, derringers, and revolvers. Marlin owned the firearm manufacturer H&R Firearms. In 2007, Remington Arms, part of the Remington Outdoor Company, acquired Marlin Firearms.[1][2] Remington produced Marlin-brand firearms at its Kentucky and New York manufacturing facilities. In 2020, Sturm, Ruger & Co. bought the Marlin business from bankrupt Remington Outdoor Company.[3][4]

Well I won't ever make excuses
for any of them.
That's one of the main reasons
that the greatest industrialized
nation that the world has ever
known gets the majority of it's
goods from 3rd world s-hole
countries now

If the world is still here, eventually
we'll have to get back to merit based
hiring for everything, the best and
brightest and the most qualified
and experienced will get the jobs
they should have, and the lesser
qualified will have to be content
to do unskilled labor jobs unless
they can improve their skills and
abilities through education.
I've seen a good many potential
automotive technicians that have
had extensive schooling, but just
never had the affinity for the work
and never will.
Used to have vocational guidance
counselors when I went to public
school that would steer you towards
the education that suited your
natural abilities, but somehow
the " you can do anything you
want to do" mindset became
imbedded, and now we have
what we have now with poor
service and shoddy workmanship.
So companies get relocated
overseas where workers don't
expect to retire wealthy

Remington gun factory set to close

Layoffs coming at facility that has been producing firearms in NY since 1816

Amy Neff Roth

Utica Observer Dispatch

USA TODAY NETWORK

UTICA, N.Y. – RemArms, the current version of Remington Arms, will close its facility in Ilion, New York, in early March, according to a letter the company sent union officials last week.

'I am writing to inform you that RemArms, LLC ('the Company') has decided to close its entire operations at 14 Hoefler Avenue, Ilion, NY 13357 (the 'Ilion Facility'),' begins the letter ending two centuries of history. 'The Company expects that operations at the Ilion Facility will conclude on or about March 4, 2024. The Company did not arrive at this decision lightly.'

The layoffs should take place between March 4 and March 18, wrote Brian Wheatley, director of benefits and compensation for the firm in Kernersville, North Carolina, to officials with the United Mine Workers of America.

Remington, the nation’s oldest gunmaker, was founded in Ilion, producing firearms there since 1816. Over the years, the facility has seen layoffs, temporary closures and bankruptcy. But through it all, generations of local families have worked at the plant, which currently employs about 270 workers, according to its union.

‘Merry Christmas’

'Merry Christmas from RemArms,' said a statement released by the United Mine Workers from its International President Cecil E. Roberts, who called the closure 'extremely disappointing' and the timing before the holidays 'a slap in the face.'

'The workers in Ilion enabled RemArms to rise from the ashes of the Remington Arms bankruptcy in 2020-21,' Roberts said in the statement. 'Without these workers and their dedication to producing the best firearms in the world, this company simply would not exist.'

Elected officials react

Local officials also expressed dismay that the area would lose a longtime employer.

'Herkimer County is deeply disappointed with RemArms’ decision to leave Herkimer County and the Village of Ilion,' said Vincent Bono, chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature. 'The impact of the livelihoods of over 250 employees is a serious concern to our community.

'The loss of revenues to the entire community will have concerning effects going forward for the progress of Ilion and Herkimer County. We will work diligently at all levels to help the displaced workers find work and continue on with their lives.'

Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-Marcy, called the news devastating. 'I stood with the United Mine Workers and their families in 2020 (when the plant was sold) and acted as a conduit between the State of New York and the new owners,' she said in a statement. 'I truly believe the employees at RemArms are a strong and dedicated workforce at the Ilion plant.

'While I do not represent the district, I represent the community; I have met many of these families and I’m here to offer the support that they need during these challenging times.'

Area elected Republicans also released statements blaming the policies of the state’s Democratic leaders for the company’s decision.

In a joint statement, state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome; Assemblyman Brian Miller, R-New Hartford; and Assemblyman Robert Smullen, R-Meco, called the news concerning and unfortunate, noting state investment in the plant and the employment it provides residents.

'Unfortunately, like we have seen all too often in New York,' the statement continued, 'burdensome regulations, crippling taxes and problematic energy and other policies continue to force businesses and companies to flee the state, taking jobs and livelihoods with them. We will continue to communicate with state and federal officials and work to help and assist the company’s employees and their families during this difficult time.'

U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., criticized Democrats’ gun control policies in a statement.

'It is because of New York Democrats’ unconstitutional gun grab policies that the oldest gun manufacturer in the country has been run out of the state' she said in the statement. 'I have spoken with local officials and Remington Arms union members in United Mine Workers of America, Local 717 about how we must stand up to New York’s failed unconstitutional gun bans.'

‘Continuing challenge’

The letter from RemArms did mention 'an environment in Georgia that supports and welcomes the firearms industry.'

But, the letter also talked at far greater length about the 'structural and continuing challenges that create production inefficiencies' in the Ilion facility. Here are the examples mentioned:

The need for 'excess' handling during production given the plant’s multi-building, multi-story layout.

The expense of running a steam plant (as well as paying natural gas and utility bills) for almost 1 million square feet of space when the company does not use all that space.

'High and unexpected' costs for maintenance and insurance, mostly because the buildings date to between 1914 and 1916.

The union, though, in Roberts’ statement, urged RemArms to look for alternatives to keep the plant operational, noting how much an abandoned plant could cost the town and the state in cleanup and other costs.

'The simple fact is that RemArms will never be able to match the experience and dedication of the workers in Central New York,' Roberts said, 'who for generations worked in this plant and kept this company alive.'

The United Mine Workers is continuing to fight, he added, looking for all legal means to keep union jobs 'where they belong, in Ilion, New York.'

The union urged RemArms to look for alternatives to keep the plant operational, noting how much an abandoned plant could cost the town and state in cleanup and other costs.

Generations of local families have worked at the Remington Arms factory, which currently employs about 270 workers, according to its union. Alex Cooper/Utica Observer Dispatch
