i think my bolt's worn out!!
« on: March 20, 2004, 09:59:35 AM »
the bolt in my Lithgow SMLE seems like it might be worn out. both the body and action walls are worn to a mirror finish and even when it's locked there seems to be alot of play in the bolt handle. also if its turned on it's side the bolt head will unlock. i want to keep this rifle because my dad gave it to me and it's my first gun. the extrator spring is also gone and i might just get a replacement bolt because the current one isn't numbers matching any way. i'm a little wary to fire it until i can get some info on these problems. it does cycle nice and fast though

I understand these rifles have replaceble boltheads. Couldn't you do that and get it re-headspaced ? I'm sorry if I'm totally off track.

Kevin,

Alpini is correct:  The SMLE Number 4 uses replaceable boltheads to adjust for optimum headspace.

The bolt body normally does NOT "Wear out".  The bolt head was available in several different sizes so that armourers could change them out for correct headspace.

At "northridge international"  I think i seen bolt heads for the #4 there stripped for $15.   Numrich also has them there are 4 different ones(sizes) numrich has two of them.

The No.1's are replaceable also, but have to be fitted as they are being  headspaced.
