"New" stuff
« on: October 06, 2023, 04:28:42 PM »
So what happened to the 300BO ?
Did the 6.5 CM take all the celebrity
away from it?
I was discussing it with another person
and I  was asking about why his 308win
was no longer effective
I have a couple of 300BO empties from
checking one out when it was the
newest and greatest. They're 223 that
I guess were cut and reshaped.
Was it really an effective hunting round?

I lost interest when learning  the 300BO  round would chamber in a 223 . I dont need that kind of stress test .

I've got a nephew that he and his 2 boys use one those latest greatest cartridges in an AR platform. They shoot deer, and pigs and stuff with'em. He complains that a lot of the hogs run off.
I told him that none of the the hogs I shoot with my AR run off, they just fall over. I use a bulk Remington 55 grain soft point. He's skeptical when I tell him I do neck shots on the hogs, and heart/lung shots on Mule deer, and whitetails.
I don't even use a scope anymore, cause an Eotech is faster, and plenty close enough.

Youngsters have got some funny ideas.

Well most relatives and friends I've hunted
with through the years use "old fashioned "
rounds- 30/06, 30/30, 270, 243, etc. for wt deer.
An exception would be a friend that have
recently been using AR's in 7.62X39 and 6.8
and they've done fine because they all know
how to hunt. They haven't abandoned the old
cartridges, they're just trying new.
I started with a 30/30 that was old when I
started using it and did fine. That was in
the heyday of magnum and weatherby magnums
and all the magazines said that your round
had to splat and expand and stay inside and
be just on the offside of the animal.
I still did ok with my 30/30 and started seriously
bowhunting. After killing the first bow deer I
had my realization or epiphany or enlightenment
or whatever you call it about what a death ray
that most any modern firearm is
I haven't had any problems or doubts about it
since then no matter what others say.
I've used several different things. Haven't used
a rimfire anything for a deer
Just the younger people I know seem to think that
the "older " cartridges are no longer effective
for whatever reason ( I guess the internet videos
have spoiled things for them)
Not much that I couldn't bag with something that
I could get the pumphouse or the head as long as
it'll penetrate sufficiently

I've often wondered what is wrong with thoe "old fashioned' rounds.  Frankly, I think some of the newly developed rounds are more, just good
   conversation piece.

IMO..Deer and black bear are for instance, just as successfully taken with a 30/30, .35 Rem or .308 as they are with the latest concoction.

Just my $ .02..take it or trash it ..

I agree. A good Ole 3030 will take anything on the north American continent.

From the way I see it,  ( probably) the majority
of the new rounds came about so as to
feed better through AR type rifles.
Don't see anything wrong with that, but
it doesn't make them " better "

The "Shooter " movie had a good bit (IMO)
to do with the way many younger people
think about shooting and hunting.  The
bad thing ( IMO again) is that many can't
separate in their heads the difference between
shooting at a stationary steel plate at 500
yards, and a live game animal at that range.

Yes- this ^ ^ ^ ^

I've done it, or at least in this state and
a couple of the neighbors
Back before things got so out of hand here
and we could go to different areas for cull
hunts, I was told that I wouldn't be able to
hunt a particular ranch outside of Brady (?)
because my 30/30 didn't have enough soup
to do the job, and I'd need at least a 243
or 30/06. Well although the oil company
executive regulars all had 270's , we were
able to tag out with our limit of 5 apiece
with one lowly 30/30 round expended
per deer. And that with an elderly Marlin
and a $60.00 pawn shop Handi rifle
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Another cartridge, that started out almost 30 years ago. Shot it in our Contenders, a cartridge called the 300 Whisper. Same dimensions. Developed by J.D. Jones here in Ohio. Was developed for swat teams using suppressors in their AR's. We used a heavier .30cal bullet, and it could reliably knock down rams at 200 meters. Swat teams used a lighter bullet, less recoil in full auto's. J.D. put a copyright on the name, so they had to call it something else.
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

i have 4 blackouts 5 if you count the bolt American. ive shot deer with it out to 200 yards and it did fine. better than any 223 load ive shot them with. now my favorite is my Grendel. it basically gives you a 250 sav in an ar. longest shot on a deer was 325 and it dumped it. i also have a 300 hamr but havent killed anything with it but ive seen about 300fps over a blackout. about 300 savage territory. 3030 falls right in the middle between a bo and hmr

So what happened to the 300BO ?

'Round these parts, the .350 Legend is quite popular as of late.  It's because it can be chambered in the AR platform, and in Iowa, "we" can now use rifles for deer hunting, AS LONG AS IT'S A STRAIGHT-WALL CARTRIDGE.  The .350 legend fits that requirement, while the .300 BO doesn't.  The "classic" big game rounds are all too long for the AR platform, so someone developed the .350 Legend for what's becoming (or already is), America's most popular auto-loading rifle, for better or worse.

you have to keep in mind the blackout wasnt really designed for hunting. it was aimed at heavy bullets slow and subsonic to be used with a can. what really made it a medium game round was barnes 110 tssx bullets that barnes designed just for the supersonic speed of the bo. other bullets will work bu in my experience its hands down the best. that comes from someone that usually argues with the barnes fan boys. but it plain works. damage at 200 was about what id expect out of a 3030 corelock at a 100 and i always got an exit wound. wish it fit in the hammer but the nose is to long. where the bo really shines for me is i can cast and powder coat 130 rcbs spitzers that shoot under 2moa at a 100 yards and cast them about free saving me a 100 bucks a thousand. the add i load them  with 15 grains of wc820 which is 10 grains less powder and i paid 70 bucks per 8lb keg instead of spending 300 bucks today for something like 2230 after i pay shipping and hazmat.
