Forgetful people like me
« on: February 26, 2024, 11:02:22 AM »
A reminder for everyone to double
check your inventory of ammo and/or
components to make sure you actually
have what you think you have.
For a while now I've been culling
things that I can no longer use, or
haven't used of everything, but especially
things I use for hunting and fishing
and camping. I've got rid of some
dies for things I no longer own or
load for, and other assorted items.
Not too awful long ago I had ( thought)
I loaded all my empty cases for 38
special and 357 magnum, and I
realized I didn't have the amount of
38 special ammunition that I wanted
to have on hand, but I didn't have any
more cases other than some mixed
in some brown paper bags.
I thought about it some more this last
week and I thought I'd go sort and
inspect what I have, and I found a
quantity that I guess I "hid" for a
rainy day. Have a decent quantity of
mixed new and once fireds that I'll
have to get busy and put together.
I had  a similar situation a while back
with shotshells after I gifted a couple
of relatives after they'd received new
shotguns. I don't know if I just didn't
have the amount of ammunition before
I shared some with them, or exactly what.
I was thinking I had a case of one particular
field load, but I did not.

I have thought about putting together
some kind of ammunition inventory
log, but just looking at it seems like
too big of a job. It'd be nice to know
exactly how much of what I actually
have,  but it'd have to be a precise
detailed log to do what I would want
it for
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I very precisely have more of everything than I will shoot in the rest of my life time. Perhaps Matt and Wyatt will live long enough to shoot it all up.

Well sir, I'm sure I have enough dedicated
hunting ammo for a long time ( not 12ga
shotshells) including enough for zero
check, but there's some of some things
I thought I have that I'm not finding.
I was pretty sure I'd bought a box of 500
new 44 mag cases. I did find a good many
new ones, but I don't see 500 of them.
Maybe 300 at the most. I'll just have to
clear the table and count everything.
Before everything built up around here
with the urban sprawl and such, I used to
be able to bird hunt enough every year
to go through a case of game loads
every year ( sometimes more with the
squirrels and wabbits etc.) so I just
a-sumed that I had many boxes of
shotshells. Already looked at the 22LR
and I'm ok there
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

me too bill but i keep casting and loading. part of the reason i have so much is at least a third of the year i cant shoot. my loading and casting isnt like i use to but i still probably an average of one hour a day. as to loosing things that happens all the time. i buy dies that i know i have and find them later. i even have a drawer full of seating and sizing dies that dont have a partner. same with molds . i have 6 molds that i only have 1/2 of. stuff must get into empty boxes i throw out in the trash. biggest problem with me is im not patient. when im doing something its asses and elbows.

Well doodley doo
I decided to load some of the rediscovered
38 sp brass I have, and one of the boxes was
once fired (?) that I came up with from some
unknown vendor and dumped em in a tumbler
to knock off any mess before I ran em through
the die. Pretty clean, nice enough to start working
on and.  . . . . Uh oh
Looks like ( I think it was 5-10) just a few were
actually 38 spl, with the rest of the box being
357 mag.   Not sure if it was a case of bait and
switch or just someone having a duh moment
or just a doofus
Picked out another batch to start on after I
put some brush out, then maybe recuperate
some.  Might lay out and count out the 44
mag I actually have on hand
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

i thought i hit the jackpot yesterday looking through brass to find some 9mm i came across two coffee cans of 40sw. plans changed right there and i set the dillion up for 40s. started loading and instantly found out why they were way back in the rear of the brass stash. the whole bunch has crimped primer pockets. i must have stuck it back their instead of tossing them figuring someday i might be desperate. well im sure not desperate enough today to swage those pockets so back it went

Not sure if this helps, never had to work on pistol brass with a crimped primer pocket, but quite a few,(in the thousands) of military 5.56 brass. Found a chamfering drill bit that worked quite well. Took some duct tape, and wrapped an old pair of pliers in the opening that would be just above the cutting section. Just enough to hold a 5.56 case so it wouldn't scratch the brass. Put the drill bit in my drill press, low speed and probably can do well over 200 rds. an hour. Sold my Dillion swager years ago.
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman
