More bad news
« on: March 25, 2024, 10:40:18 PM »
From what I understand, a big
major bridge was knocked down
by a large cargo ship in Maryland.
Not much to be heard of here. The
only report I heard was on the
radio from what sounded like
australian or new zealand reporters.
Had to be some casualties,
but they didn't say.

I don't know what's worse.
Being younger and able to
sleep soundly all night, or
getting old and hurting and
getting up only to hear of
catastrophic events everywhere
all the time.  :(

hell ive been hurting most of my life and would still like to be younger. 50 with pain sounds better than 70 with pain. lots of kayos in the world but its still layed back and safe here for the most part. i really believe that if republicans get back in control this country can heal. might be a slow process but its better than this road were on today that makes it worse evry day

Looks like the story and video has
made it to yoofloob now.
Earlier they had said that a part of
the bridge was knocked down into
the water.
'Scuse my amateur opinion, but I'm
seeing the better part of the bridge
folding up and collapsing as if it was
built with recycled paper and cardboard.
Looks to me like at least a dozen + -
vehicles are down off the bridge itself.
I can't imagine what the blankety
blank the pilot or whoever had the
helm of the ship was thinking or
what was happening.
Whoever sure wasn't concentrating
on guiding the ship.
I'm saying a prayer for the people
that were knocked off the bridge, but
realistically falling from that height
doesn't leave any room for hope

The bridge does look spindly, but  has served well since the 1970s, when it was built.  Eleven million cars and trucks cross it anually..

..But we have to keep in mind, it was built to hold cars and trucks...and not ocean going ships..

That area and port is one of the busiest in the USA
I ask Why there haven’t been large concrete bumper/ Barriers built just for things like this
Years ago with the Sunshine Skyway had a similar catastrophe the new bridge was built with these
huge circular concrete barriers so a Ship couldn’t hit. The bridge
Knowing that old erector set bridge had so much SHIP TRAFFIC going under it
It’s a FOOL to not secure it from this type of danger

Now it’s said the ship lost propulsion and tried calling authorities about possibility of hitting the bridge
I guess 911 was on Break
I truly Pray for those on the bridge

The bridge does look spindly . . .

Because it is (was)
Things used to be overbuilt and
intended to last for centuries. Yeah, I'm
sure no engineer, but the structure should
have been able to take a hit without dumping
the whole thing in the drink. I saw the way
houses are thrown together some years ago
working for a man for a few months. They're
built j-u-s-t sturdy enough with as little
material as possible to cut costs ( corners).
There's very old buildings downtown here
that will still be standing and safely usable
in a hundred years, but newer buildings thrown
together that won't make 50 years before
they need demolition

I thought tugboats were required to escort these container ships in & out of the harbor .

I agree the amount of ship traffic under that bridge. Barriers should have been built around the piers. No worries the Biden regime is supposed to rebuild infrastructor. Not sure with what, since all our money is being sent to Ukraine, and supporting all the millions of illegals.
It was very windy, and the container ship was blown into the bridge support.

Many of the harbors and dock complexes require
a pilot boat in and out of open water.
I can't see this situation being different.

Seen a short video of this. So not sure, but, when I cross the Maumee River going into Toledo, I can't recall ever seeing a freighter going in or out, without a tugboat along side. We've got grain and ore freighters, overseas and freshwater coming and going all through the season. It did happen in 1957 when a ship ran into the Ash-Consaul street bridge here. I always thought it was maritime law.

The Captain of the ship knew he had a serious problem before it hit the bridge.
He immediately contacted authorities of stop any traffic from crossing the bridge; if you look at the video the black smoke is an emergence of starting the engines at maximum throttle to try to stop the ship.
They dropped he emergency anchors but they are not going to do much against a 984 foot long,  95,000 ton ship.

The light went dark on the ship when it had total power failure.
Sadly  men were doing repair work on the bridge and most did not survive.

I can see the area where the support
piers crumpling and collapsing, yeah.
The whole bridge  ?
Something else at play IMO
Poor design or substandard materials
or lack of proper maintenance or something
like that.

All I can say is if? It was an accident, it was hit precisely where needed to take it down...

If I were of a suspicious nature, I would wonder if the helmsman tried to hit the upright support.  The video suggests that had the ship missed that
support, it may have went under the bridge with minimal damage.

It sure appears that the rudder was cut hard to starboard at the last moment, or it would have missed the support.

I did hear a suggestion by one source, that terrorism may have been ruled out far too early, since there is a possibility that the ships controls
    could have neen hacked.

Just read where quite a few of the containers were carrying hazardous waste. And, there was tugboats there, but had already been disconnected from the ship.

Why do damages on the bridge fall on the hands of the  Americans? Maersk or the company operating  the vessel surely have insurance to handle mishaps such as this.

Yes; seems natural that trhe shipping company's insurer would be holding the bag for repairs..

Seen several videos of men that worked on ships like that. All in agreement, entirely possible and probable that is was a catastrophic accident. With Biden saying the government will fund a new bridge, once again Joe is in never-never land when he speaks. Best hope scenario, salvage crews get the green light, and get the wreckage out of the river ASAP as to open up shipping again. Hopefully, less than 2 months. As far rebuilding the bridge, span was 1.5 miles across, that'll take awhile. Commuters that used that bridge to go back and forth to work. Good luck with that! It'll take 2+ years just to get plans drawn up for a ''new and improved'' bridge, and another 10-15 trying to build it. Better off digging a tunnel, at least that way, a ship can't collide with it.
