Anyone been out yet this season?
« on: April 27, 2021, 05:52:24 PM »
Our opener is this Saturday, I've been busy with school so I'm a little behind the 8 ball with scouting.

I don't have a place to hunt with a
huntable turkey population or a
legal season.
Used to be able to go west of here
a few hours. The one place was
way overpopulated with the Rio Grande birds.
Most all the people on the lease had
no interest in turkey hunting or taking
a doe or cull deer.
With the current popularity of all the "hunting "
shows and videos, it's pretty costly to just
go on a meat hunt or cull hunt for any
kind of bird or animal. Cost you a couple of
grand to pop a cap on about anything that moves

I feel pretty lucky I don't have to deal with that nonsense just to hunt. Here in NH landowners get a tax discount to keep their land open so any property that isn't posted you can legally enter and hunt on. You don't have to pay for a hunting lease or any of that BS.

We opened yesterday, but I probably won't get out till this weekend.  Right close to home the population is down the last 2 years. This will be the 3rd season I have been trying to land one with my muzzleloader. Had a few shots but have learned the constancy with muzzleloading shotguns is far too partly cloudy. Good luck to all.

That's a cool way to go for turkey hunting, it's always fun if you give yourself more of a challenge.

So far I've only had a tiny jake come into range. I had a nice tom on opening day but he was henned up with 2 hens and only came within 75 yards. I'll probably keep sticking with that same spot for now.

I saw about 50 turkeys yesterday. There were 3 or 4 good Tom's in the bunch.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

Ought to be a bunch up there
and way up into the PH
As far as I remember, the closest
I've hunted that direction was
probably an hour north of Sweetwater,
and there was thousands and on
south of there. A cousin hunts
SE of Shamrock and he says there's
birds without number all through
there and west and northwest.
He's not interested in birds though,
only big antlers

bow season has been going for 9 days now. Ive got a stand set up and have been baiting for about 3 weeks. I went to camp yesterday and filled my can. My wife bought me one of those fancy game cameras that send the pics to my computer at home. Not one buck other than a button buck on the camera. I know that bucks dont always come into the bait and could be standing back but its hard for me to get motivated enough to sit out when all im seeing are does. Rut starts here around the end of the month and i will probably wait till the first of nov to start hunting. But i did talk to both  of the other two camps and one of them the guy actually lives off grid at it. He said he saw one 8 pointer but it was a small 8 and the other camp said they have one spike coming into there bait. Thats pretty sad for here. Usually there's at least a number of bucks coming in at night. Could be a piss poor year. Im scratching my head because we didnt have all that bad of a winter last year so winter kill should have been pretty easy on the deer population.

Can't really make a knowledgeable comment
about things there in the totally different
region and climate. I can say that the antlers
people around here shoot only the big rack
bucks that are the "desirable " breeding
stock.  I've always understood from the
few different kinds of animals I've raised
the the big mature stock with the desirable
characteristics were not slaughtered, but
nurtured and protected, and the young
unproven stock was sold or slaughtered
for meat. Maybe that's all different now.

Anyway, I don't care if somebody wants
to only trophy hunt or meat hunt or what
as long as their means and methods are
by the rules.
My moto is hunt your own hunt and let
me hunt mine
