Since it's sounding right now as
regularly scheduled for the 1st
Wednesday of the month at noon,
it made me think to ask here while
we're still allowed to ask questions
without prior gubmint approval.
I grew up in the height of the cold war
when it was pretty likely that one of
the com bloc nations might get
antsy and want a feud.
We did the duck and cover at school,
and the firedrills and standing outside
and taking roll call, etc. ( of course, this
was when students were disciplined
civilized kids, and didn't act like animals)
We also learned basic ground to air
signals and a few other things that
people would consider way too militant
for schoolkids to learn.
One thing was that there were different
siren tones that had different meanings.
The tone for dangerous storms with
tornado potential was a solid unbroken
tone. The wavering tone ( up and down)
was "ENEMY ATTACK " or " IMMINENT
MISSILE ATTACK " or something like that.
Some years ago, at work with all the
shop doors open, they set off that up
and down wavering tone, and it kinda
struck a bad nerve in me, and also the
shop foreman that was a couple of
years older than me standing about
10 feet away.
Just curious as to why they'd screw up
a good established system like that.
Never have gotten a satisfactory answer
when I've thought to ask.
