New 45-70 shoots great
« on: March 27, 2004, 04:52:33 PM »
  Went back to the range with the 45-70. Took the scope off untill I round up one with more eye relief. The gun Zeroed in at fifty yards with just one adjustment to the right and left. At fifty yards with the Federal 300 Grain Speer Hot Core, it shot two almost in the same hole about 2 inches high. At one hundred yards it was dead center right and left and about two inches low. I quess I will sey it about three inches high at fifty and that should have it right on at 100 and not to low at 150 yards. I will load some hand loads for it next and some reduced loads for plinking. From what I have heard from all 45-70 owners in the NEF's they are quite accurate.
shot placement is everything.

  I can see the grin from here.

Your hooked now, and there is no cure but to shoot more 45-70's.  I own two 45-70's and a 45-90, and they are just plain too fun to shoot.

I also got the itch from listening to everybody praise them. I got mine last february and will never part with it. In the words of Tim Allen "ooohhh ooohh oooohhh oh!!!!!!" gotta love these big bores.I can't wait to start reloading for it. I added 1.5 pounds of lead shot to the butt end,and it made a great difference. Allows me to hold on better.

If at first you don't succeed then change the rules

I loaded some shells for mine today. Its been raining now for two days so I have not been back out. I loaded some 405 grains with Unique and also some 300 grain With Unique. I also loaded up some 300 Grain Hornady HP loads with 3031 to about Mid Trapdoor velocities. If any of them are spectacular I will let you in on it.
shot placement is everything.
