Rossi '92 repairs

A few months ago I had a case-head separation and the case mouth got stuck in the chamber of my Rossi really good.

I took it to the local gunsmith and it took him over a month to get it back to me.  When I got it back it didn't feed full length .357s very well.  It looks like the ejector sticks too far out of the bolt-face.  The case rim gets stuck under the ejector and the cartridge won't flip up all the way.  It just stays down on the lifter and the bullet doesn't go into the breach.

I'm inclined to dismantle this thing myself and see what I can do.  I hate to lose it for another month.

So I come to you fellers for advice.

Is anyone familiar with this problem?  I know that ejector can be a bugger to work with as it is under spring tension when you reassemble it.  What would cause it to stick out too far?

BTW, never heard of that particular problem. Is the bottom of the ejector squared off?

All I know is that rounds that had fed just dandy before the "repairs" now get stuck.  And that the ejector is visibly different.  Even after not seeing it for a month, I could notice that it just didn't look the same as before.

When the cartridges jam, I can stick my finger in and push back on the ejector a little bit.  I can feel something "give" and the cartridge flips up so the bullet is on level with the breach.

I want ya to try somethin' Pard...see if you can pull the ejector out through the front with the gun fully assembled. It kinda sounds like whoever reassembled it last failed to put the collar back in it and the ejector is almost ready to fall out of the gun when the bolt is open!  Sumpthin sure ain't right in there!!!! Maybe yer smith lost yer original ejector and tried to make one from scratch?

Have you got the manual with the exploded view of the gun? If so I'd start tearing it down and closely compare every single piece against the parts shown in the manual!!!

I examined it a bit over lunch break.  It appears that when I push the ejector back with my finger, I don't really push the ejector back as much as the whole bolt slides back maybe 1/16". This is enough to lift the shell up the rest of the way.

I tried getting the bolt to go back all the way by operating the lever fully and it ain't enough - gotta push it back with my finger.

Another possibility is that the lever pin is not in place. On the right hand side of the receiver is small hole, there is a corrosponding screw on the opposite side, remove this screw and  see if you cabn see day light through the hole. If so the gun was put back together without the lever pin! :eek:

The only other thing I can think of is that yer smith altered the "camming" surface on the pivot end of yer lever

I did a little surgery on the thing.  Took me until 1:00 am to get it all back together - 'course I didn't start until after kids were in bed etc.  The ejector would keep coming out even after I put the pin in.

You know the part of the ejector that gets sandwiched between the lever pin and that little bar?  Well the little bar was too low which didn't sandwich the ejector very well.  I gave that bar a little rap to bend it up and it looks like it should work.  Once I did this it only took minutes to put back together.

That's a new one on me! Sounds like yer smith got a little radical when trying to get it back together! :eek:

A BFH isn't always the solution, but sometimes........
