Yeah this year I'm giving my spot up to my grand daughter, and my son. Arguably one of the best hunting spots in the area, but I will get more joy if she gets one than if I shoot another buck.  I will go out somewhere, but not far from that spot so I can hear if she shoots, and hopefully enjoy getting to see her get her first buck. I just don't have the gumption that I once had for the first day of buck.   If I shoot one, or even before I shoot. I start thinking about all the work involved getting it from field to freezer. Although I still do like deer meat.

I've seen a lot of die hard hunters hang it up over the years, and never really understood why. As I get a little older, I find myself starting to feel the same way...............

I was on stand opening morning, after a nifty fall when climbing aboard. The fourth rung was full of termites and gave way as my son entered the stand first and I followed. Not to be deterred, I told him when I got there to seize me by the collar, drag me past the fifth rung, then into the stand.

That did not work out to plan. He tried to grab me around my left arm instead. Boys don't listen to their fathers. He had promised to rebuild the ladder before opening day.

I slipped out of his hand, full weight, onto the number one rung, which gave way. I hit the ground backward on a roll Into the SOFT tall johnson grass, like a hay loft.

I did not get hurt. I did crunch my neck a little bit and it'll probably become arthritic over time. There have been 3 chairs that have given way beneath me following all of my surgeries that caused me to fall backwords onto my neck and shoulders, so it was not the first time.

Fortunately, there was a metal ladder with complete rungs. I was able to sit on stand 4 hours. My other hunting partner has since rebuilt the entire ladder.

I think this fall on a Saturday morning precipitated the loosening of my pulmonary embolism, which took on a life of its own on Sunday morning.

Ever since my dad passed I haven’t had close to the same drive. I believe now I was working my ass off just to show off to him. His ashes are scattered on the highest spot in a place I hunt in southern ohio where he used to run the hills as a kid with his brothers.

Good memories. Time heels the hurt, but the passing never ends. Life is sometimes difficult and some memories are always hard. This too shall pass. Blessings To you and your father for the happy times you spent together. Honor him by going hunting and keeping that joy alive in your heart. Hunting is Therapeutic

It's pretty much impossible to find a place to deer hunt here in Texas without spending a ton of money for a lease the past several years, same goes for a day hunt and I'm done with it. Do I miss deer hunting? Absolutely I do, but I'm not going to spend the kind of money it takes to go deer hunt now.

I saw 10 deer the first day including 3 bucks, but I let them all go by.

Second day, I saw several does then this one came out chasing a doe,

I decided to shoot it at about 50 yards with iron sights, so all worked out just fine.

I went out last evening and saw 6 does and a small buck.

Can't eat the horns but that's a beautiful mature buck and a lot of nice venison. I envy you guys that have bucks you can pass up all day. I see none in daylight. My silver lining is literally hundreds of feral hogs and a lot of trigger time in killing then grilling those.

I envy those who can hunt the same approximate area for years. Seems like every time I start to learn the game patterns in a area I have to or choose to hunt elsewhere for one reason or another.

Had the pleasure of hunting with my grand daughter on the first day. Was her first year for buck hunting, and she shot this 11 point with a .243 I had bought her. The shot was about 100 yards. Not to savvy at posting photos here. I think if you click on the photo it will appear upright.

Yes Lloyd, it was truly blessing to be with her when she got her first Buck. My son had got his buck in archery, and we were debating on who was going to hunt with her. It ended up I got to sit with her, which ended up being a memory I will take to my grave.

Proud Grandpa indeed, and rightly so, Drilling Man !

I'm Leaving most deer hunting to grandson and great grandsons.  Here's another first day deer by my great
grandson, Brody..   ..And a shot of his waiting in snow for a followup doe.  ...Also a .243 !

A couple months before deer season I asked my son what rifle Maria was going to use. He said, I guess a 30-06. I said thats to much rifle and recoil for her. So I bought her a .243 and had her shoot it some. The .243 I got her was the Mossberg Patriot. It has an extra piece for the butt stock, for an adjustable length of pull. Has a 22 inch barrel with fluting to reduce weight. The action is pretty smooth for a rifle at the price of $470, which also came with a cheap scope. The scope is not that clear, but good enough for deer hunting. The trigger is also pretty good for a cheaper rifle. Didn't measure it but guessing around 3.5 to 4 pounds. It also shot on paper fairly well. Its not a range rifle, but plenty good enough for a field rifle.

Yes, those youth rifles that have the extra part  for the butt stock, are really nice as they grow into them.

Don't know for sure, but suspect the one  Brody used, was a Savage I gave to his Dad, years ago.
