we are talking old vs new so lets be generous and say that 2600 represents a 200 dollar bill in 1970. my first new car was a plymoth 340 duster. blew the motor at 40k. rebuilt it and a 1000 miles later the rear end blew. transmission (4 speed) was replaced at 50k had enough of it so i traded it on a 77 chev 4x4 new. left me on the side of the road with a blown tranny on the way home from buying it. they rebuilt it and that one lasted less than a 1000 miles. they then relaced it with a new one. sold that truck to dad at 35k and it made about 5k before it wiped the cam. i wont even discuss my first couple mopars, a gtx and a roadrunner because i think i was under them more than sitting in them. fast forward to 2003. bought a new chev 4x4 bought another in 06, 10, 15, 17, and a ram in 20 and my latest a 2024 silverado. i had exactly 0 problems with any of them. buddy has my 06 and it has 275k on it today and 99 percent of the last 100k has been plowing. heads never been off that motor. still gets 1500 miles to a quart of oil and purs like a kitten. original tranny too and its a half ton! if it wasnt so rotted out id hop in it and drive 2000 mikes tomorrow.
people cry about purchase prices and repair bills but factor in what wages were in the 60s and 70s to todays wages and there no more expensive and you get something for the same money that lasts 3 times longer. you all know im not a toyota fan but i owe them thanks. their bullet proof motors in the 70s and 80s when the big three made junk shook up those manufactures to make motors today that last just as long and are if anything ahead of toyota in technology and fuel economy.
there has never been a time thats better for truck buyers, performance car buyers or for that matter ANY buyer that gave you more vehicle for your dollar than today. heck ive got a dodge challenger that is 500hp turns low 12 second quarter mile times gets 25mpg and will easily go 200k. best old muscle car i owned was a ss454 chevelle. it did high 12 second quarter mile times got 10mpg (im being generous) and was burning enough oil at 60k that i had to rebuild it. we live in the glory days of automobiles. think it was better in the 70s?? you have a VERY SHORT memory. think it willbe better in the future? all it will take is another liberal take over of the government and your going to be driving ev's that cost twice as much or be peddling your bike.
