What ever happened to STP ?
« on: March 12, 2025, 11:30:21 AM »
It seems like just a couple decades ago, STP waas being used by many people, but now days we rarely hear of it..

Has STP tapered off by that much...or is it just that I am not attentive enough ?

STP used to be one of few, auto servicing companies that was among the special  categories.

Now it is just another Auto based company as there are a LOT of high end companies that make their own special blends of this , that or the other thing.

The Days of going to a auto store to buy 10W, 20-20W, 30W etc. oil is looong gone now; such oils still exist (especially for pre-sixties autos where not using what was used in the past can be a bad thing.
Last year was the first year in my life I did not change oil for summer and winter.

cars and trucks use thinner oil today. my car uses 0w40 and my truck 5w20. stp thickens oil and would deter oil flow in these new better motors with tighter tolerances and possibly harm them. for the most part it was just gear lube in a fancy can

Thanks guys...you answered my query very well.

Another product it seems many use today for a myraid of reasons, is Marvel Mystery Oil...

I have a can of it that I have had for quite some time, but I don't use ity in my car..although I sometimes put a little shot in a lawn mower tank.

Another use I have for it , is on my whetstone to keen up a blade.  It seems to flow off the filings real well

Of course, if I am doing food handling blades...I will use cooking oil to suspend the filings.

dad used to swear by marvel  for everything. put it in all his motors used it in gas, used it when drilling taping ect and even for a penetrating oil. please dont dump it in your gas with any kind of regularity. modern direct injected motors dont claen valve train carbon and sludge and burning oil in then would be the last thing youd want to do. had an auto mechanic teacher that swore it was just 2 stroke motor oil
