I have read on this forum and elsewhere that H 110 and W296 are identical, and H4227 and IMR 4227, H4895 and IMR 4895 and others are identical. But, the reloading manuals give different loadings for these powders that are susposed to be identical. Are the differences significant or not?

i'd say it's more like QUITE SIMILAR and NOT IDENTICAL. differences may or may not be significant, so follow the manual. i guess you can even have slight differences in the same powder, but different lot. seems like nothing is etched in stone when it comes to reloading, except for studying the manuals.

I had heard the same thing about W296 and H110. Well I got tired of the chat and posted a not on the Hodgdon website. Well, Phil Hodgdon wrote back and told me that W296 and H110 WERE identical powders and the data for each are INTERCHANGABLE. So I had to give in and accept that those powders were identical. The IMR and Hodgdon powders with the same numbers do not fit in the identical catagory. There are many warnings from both manufacturers that you can not interchange their data.

Thank you all. After reading the above posts I came to the same conclusion you folks did. It is best just to go by the loading manuals. That way there are no unknowns. It was good to hear that Hodgon confirmed that H 110 and W 296 data can be interchanged.

I posted a question on the TC forum just tonight, when Greybeard posted the same answer in question here. Doesn't Winchester data give only one load for W296 and advise that the load should not be adjusted? Or am I years behind in my reading? Have things change with this powder? I can remember hearing and reading that H110 and 2400 were the same but never heard of W296 being the same.
