new crappie tactic
« on: September 16, 2003, 11:24:38 AM »
I just got back from the lake and I ended up catching a bunch of crappie. I brought home 7 of them to eat and let the rest go. The weird part was that I caught them trolling a HotNTot (normally a tactic I use for walleye around here). Anyone ever troll up a mess of crappie?

Yep.

A couple of summer's ago, a friend and I spent the better part of the day trolling for crappies in a Michigan lake just over the Indiana state line.  We'd use a jig and minnow combination and drag the lake.

We ended up catching enough to have a 4 person fish fry with leftovers.

Did end up with a few bass at the same time.

Here in the Mid-South trolling is the preferred method of crappie fishing once the fish come off the spawn in the spring.  Folks have their boats rigged all sorts of ways to handle all the rods.  Spider-rigging is real big..the rods are spayed out like a fan and the lures are ran at different depths until the magic depth is found then most lures are placed at that depth.  Popular lures include Hot Shots, the smalllest Rattle Traps, Spots,
small Rebel and Rapala minnows, RoadRunner style jigs, and the local favorite crankbait is the Bandit..usually in shad, pearl, or white patterns.
Pontoon boats are popular for this type of fishing..
