Blackhawk in 10mm/38-40
« on: June 09, 2013, 06:28:29 PM »
I just picked up a NIB Ruger Blackhawk "Buckeye" and really like it. I fired 100 rnds of 10mm through it and 50 38-40. It was very accurate with the 38-40 but was not with the 10mm. The throats on the 10mm cylinder are very tight, they measure between, .398 and .399, the 38-40 measures .4015.

Since I primarily shoot 10mm and don't want to start reloading for 38-40, I want to get the throats opened up on the cylinder, what is the best size to open them up to, .401?

thanks

First off, congratulations on the Buckeye--I'm jealous!  The throat issue is interesting; since the cartridge headspaces on its case mouth, it could be tricky?  Me, I'm not adept at metalworking, and would probably contact Cylindersmith.

Or contact Ruger.  My .45 Colt originally had some issues.  They had them all fixed and even replaced the barrel and both cylinders and timed it for me.  Since your's is older, there might be a charge, but I'd at least check.  I know a few guys whose older ones were fixed free too.  ;)

Id just clean it, put it back in the box and ship a cheap Blackhawk to Hamilton Bowen for a 10mm conversion. Your Buckeye should be near the $750 range but not after any smith work.

After searching around and talking to a few ruger people,I have a .4105 throating reamer on the way. The bore slugged out at  .401 exactly. The tight throats in the 10mm are squeezing the bullet down before it hits the barrel, it would be raising chamber pressures also. I am going to start looking for a third cylinder for it, I will chamber it in 10mm magnum. I have never been a big revolver fan but I think that is changing!

Dont for one moment under estimate the first 10mm!!!  I have a old Marlin in 38-40 and used to have a Remington 14C, its a FINE CALIBER!!

I am also a 10MM fan and have owned at least one one since it came to be. I almost bought one of these when they first where offered and passed. for me, I just dont see the advantage of a 10mm in a revolver. I like a revolver, but the 10mm is a auto caliber and a thourough bread auto caliber at that!

Got to agree with CW here.  I've owned one of these "Buckeyes" for 'bout 20 years and I'm not sure if I ever even shot the 10mm cylinder....love the .38-40 though.  It is also one of the best looking Blackhawks that I own.  Also got the other "Buckeye"(.32H & R/.32-20) and it's a shooter in .32-20 but is not even close in fit and finish to the 38-40/10mm.

Old post but I had a Buckeye Sports Ruger Blackhawk 38-40/10mm and a matching serial number Buckeye Sports Ruger Blackhawk in 32-20/32 mag. I don't believe I ever fired them at all. I sold them in a fit of stupidity years ago.

hardly makes it a collector piece. A new super will set you back about the same. Blackhawks arent cheap anymore. Id open it up to 401. If you ever decide to sell it there isnt anyone thats going to know the difference anyway with the wide tolarances rugers have in just normal production. Ive seen 45 colt cyliders anywhere from 451 to 454 right out of the box. Now you could buy a 700 dollar blackhawk and pay hamilton a grand to do the work.
Id just clean it, put it back in the box and ship a cheap Blackhawk to Hamilton Bowen for a 10mm conversion. Your Buckeye should be near the $750 range but not after any smith work.

didnt realize this was that old of a post. back years ago i had a more practial one. It was a 4 5/8s super that i found a 4440 buckey cylinder for a 100 bucks on a fourm. It dropped right in but it too needed the throats opened up to 430 so it would run normal 44 mag bullets and the bullets wouldnt rattle down the bore. I think it was 427 as it came
