Bear sign?

I know what real bear sign is, but what type of food did the old cowboys call bear sign? I just read a L'Amour novel and the cook was whipping up bear sign. Sounded like some sort of donuts. I figured this was the place to find out what it is.

I just read another L'Amour book and he explains that they are doughnuts. His books are a fun read and the guy is one of the few fiction authors who gets his gun info right.

The doughnuts at that time were not the cute round holey things we see now but more like a cruller? They looked like droppings I believe but cant say for sure
