Small pellet buck shot help.
« on: March 29, 2004, 01:35:41 PM »
OK, Im getting kinda excited about coyote hunting.  I am looking to concoct some home rolled shotshells and need some help/recommendations.  Im thinking of using smaller buck, like T or F, or the various b sizes (B,BB,BBB.)  Im looking to make 3" Mags.  Im starting from scratch here as the only shells I have on hand are 2 3/4 AAs, so ANY 3" case recipes are fine.  Can I use any of the B sizes in regular data as long as its by weight and not volume?  Im not going to be high volume loading, so I can measure each shot charge.  Anyone else have any good recipes?  I am looking at getting some Heavy Shot #" waterfowl loads to tide me over, but Id rather get to loading my own in this case.
Any suggestions welcome.

I don`t think that I would load anything smaller than number 4 buck`s for coyoets. I used to use alot of 2`s and BB`s on fox and they did a real good job on them, but a coyote is alot bigger and harder to knock down. I once hit a big dog with a 1 1/2 oz. load of 2`s at about 15 yrds. I knocked him back about 5 ft. He got up and ran. I hit him again at about 20 yrds. and rolled him over again. I did the same thing at 30 yrds. and at about 40 yrds. I findly had enough lead in him I could go up and finish him. From what little I seen of coyotes I believe they are just as hard to kill. Get a Layamn reloading manual. They are the best I`ve ever seen for shot shell loaders. They also have a section on external blastic of shot which is smoething every shotguner should read and study.
