45-70 Dies??
« on: March 30, 2004, 05:18:00 AM »
OK....you guys got me.  I'm sending off the Ultra frame for a 45-70 barrel today.

I'm looking at dies and other reloading gear for my new caliber.  What dies should I buy?  I'm only loading for the single shot Ultra, so do I need any kind of crimp on the case at all?  If so, what crimp?  Roll crimp or taper?  It's a straight walled case, so I'm gonna have to bell the mouth, right?

Right now I'm looking at the RCBS three die set with roll crimp at Midway USA, the Lee Pacesetter 3 die set, Lyman 3 die set, and the Hornady Custom Grade New Dimension 3 die set.  Which ones would you guys suggest?

Also, will I need to trim cased often with this round?

Wilscott:

I got a extra brand new set of Hornady's New Dimension 45-70 dies I'll let you have for $20.00 plus shipping...you'll need a shell holder for them though.I use them and like them a-lot...I got these through a trade and don't really need 2 sets. I started off with brand new Remington nickle brass and weighed and sorted to within + - 1 grain on each case.I load the Nosler 300 gr. Partiton up and over 2100fps and have very little case stretch with them.A-lot of folks don't like them...but I've never had any problem with them splitting or anything else...

PM me if you want them.

Mostly you don't need a crimp. Rarely, a crimp helps get a good burn on "slow for caliber" powders. Roll crimp is what I use.

Only dies I have used in this caliber are Lee's. I really like the powder through the expander ball feature but you can buy that die separately if you want to add it.

Mac, you've got a PM.

Do the Lee shell holders work with the Hornady dies?

The die don't care who made the shellholder, nor vice versa. You'll like this cartridge.

I bought the Lee pacesetter set and the Lee factory crimp die. I don't have the experience that most of you do yet bet they made a good looking cartridge and shot well.

Wlscott, If you have a chance to buy a set of the Hornady dies, cheap, I think you should get them!  They are not really very expensive to begin with, not like Reddings.....I've used LEE dies for years in quite a few calibers. They are great for the pistol calibers, BUT for some of my rifle calibers, .303Brit, 30.06, 7mm-08, I've found the bullet fit to be somewhat loose.
I bought a set of Hornady dies for my 22 Hornet , and found the bullet fit from these to be very tight! I think that they are so much better that I bought a Hornady neck sizer for my 7mm-08 so I  can go back and neck size the cases that I've already prepped.....
The LEE factory crimp die is very good though, and it is available separately in 45-70

rmtaylor is on the right track, I think.

I really think the .45-70 needs a fairly firm crimp to help get the slower powders burned before the bullet leaves the barrel. With IMR 3031 and similar-burning rate powders, I've had a lot of unburned powder left in the barrel after shooting 300-grain slugs. I use Hodgdon 4198.

A Lee three-die set is economical and adequate for nearly all purposes. The factory crimp die adds another plus in that you can set your seating die to seat only, then crimp with the FCD.

You can, of course, buy other dies, such as RCBS and Hornady, then add a Lee FCD and get the same results.

For my 45-70 I have RCBS dies and for the 45-90 I use Lyman dies.  I have no problem crimping with either set.
