Strange Thing Not Seen While in the Outdoors
« on: December 29, 2003, 04:24:39 AM »
I was out deer hunting this weekend and twice I heard this sound that made me turn around but nothing was there.

I was walking out about an hour before sunset and to my left and behind me I distinctly heard a sound that was like a low ( frequency not volume ) buzzing or humming close by. In fact, at first I though I had been buzzed by a hummingbird but I thought that was pretty odd for December at that latitude. I snapped my head around and there was nothing. Same thing happened a little while later while I was about to enter a piece of trail that looked like fog was forming on.

It was definately not insects. The closest I can come to describing it is like I said, being buzzed closeby by a hummingbird if you know what that's like.

I had a simular experience while I was out checking my irrigation water on my hay field last summer.

It happened several times and always at night.  I walked down the road, past my neighbor's house, and shortly after passing the house I heard a sound like a dog running up behind me.  I could hear the running, padded feet and panting, just like a dog.  I thought my neighbor's dog got loose and was running up behind me.  I turned on my flashlight and spun around and nothing was there.  It kept happening to me all the way out and back while I walked clear to the end of the field and back.  It happened every time I went out at night to check the water in that field.  It never happened in any other of my fields or during the daytime.  Every time it happened, I would turn around and shine a light but never saw anything.

It got so convincing that several times I ran for the house cause I knew something was out there, but I never saw nothing.

Guess I'll have to just take your word on that. Don't want to start anything just so I can quit it.

Got any of those high tension lectric wires nearby? I hear some funny sounds around those things. I fish a hole in a navigation channel that has some wires across it, and it does make some strange noises.
Hey, hold my beer and watch this.

I thought about that because there are overhead transmission lines in this area but I don't know of any on the ridge I was on and it's usually pretty obvious when you pass under those because they keep the ground beneath them pretty clear. Also, the noise changed pitch like something aproaching and leaving, like I said, it was the experience of being buzzed by something in flight.

I had a spooky experience 4 or 5 years ago while deer hunting. The Little Hot Spring Valley lies at an elevation of about 4000'. It is 1/4-1/2 mile wide, about 4 miles long. To the north and east the mountains rise to 5,500'. The south and west are bounded by lava fields. Starting from the north I was hunting south about a 1/4 mile into the lava field. It is fairly open with juniper and pine, with pockets of brush. This was a warm, shirt sleeve morning about 9:00am.

I was just poking along, taking a few steps, stopping, looking around, then moving on. Suddenly I caught a flash of something to my left. Looked that direction. Nothing. Must have been my imagination. Take a few more steps, there it is again! Again nothing. Happened a couple more times. I began thinking, coyote? bobcat? may a mountain lion stalking me?someone watching me through a scope? Big Foot! Getting a littlenervous here! Finger on the safety, ready for a snap shot. Next time it happen I froze, not moving my head. Not my imagination. I can see the glint of something out of my left eye. Move my head, it's gone!! Then it's there again. Only moving my eyes now, it can get it's location. I see it now! It is the sun shining off the concave surface of my shirt button.  Dang it!! No Big Foot. No mountain lion. Not even a coyote. Just my shirt button.

That reminds me of when you are walking and your pants, vest and jacket, scruff on your face and your collar, or some other piece of clothing are rubbing together and you think something is stallking you. When I was a kid and I would stay late at a friends and walk home at dusk, I would always hear something in the woods following me. I found out later in life that it was probably my pants rubbing together. All those times I was scared, it was me scaring myself. That is usually what scares me, a sound and my imagination. It still gets me from time to time, especially at dark.

I have owned my camp since '87 been hunting in VT. since '73 for many years since I have owned my camp when me and my brother went off hunting down the old loggin road almost every trip something would follow us up on the ridge and walk with us but keeping a distance away and out of site.  I could hear the branches breaking every so often.  We never got to see what it was all those years.  I scanned with my scope and never saw a thing.  It would follow us every chance it would get.  Now that I can hardley walk that far now it comes to my camp now at night.  Those bright nights with the hunters moon with snow on the ground I'm looking for sure.

With all the wild predators we have now if your not paying attention in the woods you could be in trouble.  We must teach our children about the woods and predators.   I have taught my kids everything I know and it has paid off so far.   They just have to be aware.

Hi BigBill :D
You hit it right on the head, when you said (with all the predators we have now), I was watching a documentary, about a month ago, and they was saying that there are more tigers as pets, in America, than whats in the wild. Now that`s scary   We don`t know what fruit cake has a tiger, or anyother bigcat, or dangerous dogs, that they let run free at night. That fruitcake could be a neighbor just down the road

Bulletmaker like I said before I was seeing large cat tracks(mountainlion) for many years and eveyone I told laughed at me, then i seen one at my camp and this is no joke the males run around 200lbs.  One night at my camp my son and his girlfriend had a campfire going outside(burning old deck) and as the fire went lower the coyotes arrived.  My son said one came by first it sounded like a German shepard running by and one after another they kept coming and he said before he knew it they were circling the my trailer all together.   Lucky he was only 30' away from the trailer.   Another time I'm walking down the old loggin road hunting and heard something on the ridge above me that overhangs the road I backed off not giving it a chance to come closer or to attack me since I know that mountainlions are their and they take advantages in that type of situation.  Some say these cats are released pets??  I don't think so years ago they were just in the higher elevations and now 20 years later they are coming lower into populated areas as they reproduce they are spreading out farther again. These cats are being seen all over the northeast now too in Mass., in CT. and even in Maine near the coastal areas where I go on vacation there have been sightings.   We are being over run with predators here like coyotes and bobcats too.  I'm sure the'll (mountainlions) hunt list soon as soon as somebody gets attacked its also funny the state DEP (department of enviromental protection) knows these cats are there but won't admit it I think they think they will actually control the over population of deer we have here because their hunting program is failing here.  It ain't working having a lottery hunting system its not putting enough hunters in the woods to kill the deer.  I'm starting to wonder if they interduced the mountainlions here in CT?   Another thing I don't understand how could they say years ago that they killed off all the mountainlions?   There is big forests all over the northeast there is no way they could cover all that land and be sure??  These big cats are very elusive and your lucky to see one and i have only seen tracks for many years in the snow.  Now even my neighbor in VT. is seeing them too now.
                                                                             BigBill
Here's a funny you talk about things let loose at night one of my older brothers is short he looks like a meatball with legs one night he out ran a great dane that was on his heels at first.  We still laugh about it to this day.  When your scared you can run as fast as you want to not as fast as you can.

No mountainlions???  No fishers??? No Coyotes?? Ya ok??  You guys dress up really good??  4 legs and all??  And they work together just like the real thing too?  Gosh you guys are good!!!!!!  Next time I'll have to breakout my sks with the 30rd mag and let it roll over their heads??  I'll lock my outhouse first!!!!!!  Kidding!!!  Funny no neighbors on both sides of me far away of course see or hear anything but their is one past my camp way up behind me on another road who sees the big cats too they were in the rutland news paper for sighting big cats(mountainlions)  BigBill

Many years ago I had my cousins buddy up there who is a full blood american indian try to sneek up on me after they dropped me off near an orchard(bear hunting)it was almost dusk and  he made big mistake.  I heard branches breaking behind me so I turned around and then he found himself about 25yds away looking at the muzzle end of my 444 marlin.  Then he was screeming don't shoot, don't shoot!!!!!  I would of never just shot(some hunters do sound shots) but it did scare the snots out of him?  After that nobody played games with me again.  We were chasing a bear out of that orchard for 4 days in a row and we were so close the barf was still smokin from them gorging themselves with apples so much they barf and re eat all over again.

Was sitting in my treestand before daylight one day this season.  All of a sudden I heard something fall through the nearby trees and impact on the ground.  You could hear it hitting branches on the way down through the treetops and then a distinct "thud" as it hit the forest floor, then nothing.  My first thought was a squirrel that missed a jump, but there was no further sounds from the dry leafs in the area.  I looked around after daylight but found no sign of anything.

Hey Bill, just pulling your chain a bit :-D
Mountain lions did you say??? Just ask the Vermont Fish & Game and they'll tell you a big fat NO  Thats cause they have better things to do than being out looking for lions and such. They have a higher agenda (their out poaching) Artical in the Rutland hearld news paper about one of the Vt. Fish & Game  board of directors was caught shooting at the stuffed ( mounted deer) from his truck window
So I guess that by the heading of this thread is ( Strange things seen in the outdoors) It'd have to be a Vt. Fish & Game member out legally hunting :-D
Bill as far as that bear goes, if you know their there, you need to get on the edge of the orchard ( down wind side )and call them in.

The orchard i was in runs east to west with west side being the highest up the mountain/ridge I was sitting in the northwest corner with a great view with the wind in my face.   The only time we seen the bear is when we were on the move walking thru there we just happen to wake him up and push him out of there.  He gave us an exceiting hunting trip for a few days it was worth the trip. I really think he was playing with us having a laugh.  That year he was small(tracks) the last time i was up there his tracks(back paws) are the size of my 13" sorels.  If you go to the Rutland Hearld do a search for mountainlions my neighbor is written up for a sighting she had on her farm near me.                                                BigBill

The lack of sound...in the dead of summer...
« Reply #18 on: March 16, 2004, 06:32:26 AM »
back about 18 years ago, when I was 12, me and my two friends snuck out of one of their basements at 1am during a sleep over...we lived in the suberbs of Northern Va, but our houses backed up against several miles of park land...and we foolishly decided to take a hike in the woods...
we played everyday in those woods, and often camped in them...well we got about a 1/2 mile from home...and y'all know how loud the woods are on a summer night...frogs, crickets and such...well we where almost to the creek when it went dead quiet...every noise but the creek stopped...we froze...we all stuped, got back to back, sat there scared to death...its a big woods, and yet there wasn't a sound but the creek...we decided to run for it and beat feet all the way home till we reached the edge of the woods at his backyard, and then the sound suddenly started again...we went into his basement not to sneek out again...

As I turned about 21, I started walking in those woods everynight with my little 32 sw long, and my dog...never had that happen to be again...But never forgot it...

Any Ideas what caused it???

I got one of those wounded game calls it said when using it the bears come running for an easy meal and you better have 360 degree vision and be ready for a quick shot too.

At night I have no clue to whats going on my camp is all by itself and far away from all the other houses so the I can hear anything that comes by me.  I have also noticed the level of things moving in the night has picked up even in CT. as well as Vermont too.  I'm going north soon to see whats making all this noise at night up there I can't wait to go as soon as my road is open again.                                         BigBill

Had heard the padded steps & panting before. Was on a coon hunt and it stayed very close, but out of sight for along time and in different areas.
Finally my cousin got a brief glimps of a bobcat sized animal.

Have also known that I was being watched before after feeling startled. One explination for this comes from the Lumber Jacks. Some had felt this and turned around to find a Deer watching them. The theory is that they felt the Deers reaction to seeing them!

These extra senses, or sixth sense sure did save alot of lives (on both sides) during the civil war. It is not too uncommon of a story for a man to get the willies and quit the back of his horse just before a bullet crossed his saddle after feeling cold eyes on himself. I believe in this and will try to keep a very neutral frame of mind when hunting instead of having a (I'm gona bust him) attitude.

HEY BILL
I think you are right about the descrete stocking of predators by DNR. Have several examples but way too much to list here. Even includes the coyotes which were non-existent here till the early 70's

Heard the same thing so many times while out fishing early in the season at my favorite pond.  Finaly found out it was the drum of the Male Woodcock beating his wings during mating season.  You learn sumthin new every day   .
