Its all coming together now Diary of a new shooter part V
« on: February 16, 2003, 05:04:47 AM »
Well I picked up my 45/70 yesterday. Man what a deal 1895 Marlin, its a little lighter than I thought it would be.  Lets see, I finally ended up buying a new BH in 41 magnum, I just couldnt find one used cheaper than my dealer could get me one new.  Its good to have friends that are dealers.  My good friend Pecos has sent me a nice used shotgunbelt.
I am still gatherin up loading stuff. Lead bullets are hard to find here for some reason.
I am on the waiting on my leather from Big Ed. It will be a couple of more weeks but I can wait.
Nothin against Jimmy's nice shootin carts. I am goin to build one myself. I want something different than everyone else.........just wait and see.
So what am I forgetting?  I know its something.

Are you going to be using a loading block or stage strip?  I spent a day or two working on several blocks (did this while the lead was heating in the pot).  A Forstner bit of 1/2 inch is perfect for the .45LC rounds.  Only problem is what to do with it after you load your guns at the loading table.  Mine is about 3x5 inches so it fits in a pocket.
Need something to hold all the empties, too.  Seen empty shot bags, wooden boxes and the like.
Remember when you build your gun cart to have it so you can load it into/out of the car.  Some I've seen are right pritty but would take a troop of cavalry to lift
Keep us posted and I'll keep thinking, too.  Next week is our shoot--can't wait!

There is a pard locally that has been at this for quite a while, and has one of the two neatest carts I've seen, his is a stagecoach, gunrack on the boot, ammo, empties, cleaning stuff under the drivers seat, cooler and other stuff in the passanger compartment.  Someone worked on this one a long time!!   The other belongs to a young lady I've mentioned before.  It is an out house, moon on the door, metal roof, vent out the roof, made of old barn wood.  It is the most imaginitive I've ever seen!!

I really like using the Hornady cowboy bullet boxes. They hold twenty, so it works out really well for a stage.  Half of one row for one pistol, half for the other, one row for the rifle.  If there is an odd number of rounds for a stage, then it's really easy to check the number remaining in the box.  AND if it gets left at a table some time, no big loss.

I now have a new cookie jar started for one of jimmys carts.  From what I can tell they seem to be the most/best for the money that I have seen commercially.

Keep up the good work DB, I always look forward to seein' hou your gettin' along!

Things are going well. I am feeling more confident about going to the matches. I have found out that sometimes you have to be a little pushy. I think some of the old timers forget that you are new.  I need a little more help and I have gotten to where I ask for it.  We have a few places where shotgun targets are not knock down.  I was hitting them and the RO is supposed to let you know as you go along if your hit was sufficient for score.  Well a couple of times they werent doin it. I just had to remind them to tell me.   Hopefully things will move along.
I am thinking of gettin one of Jimmy's small carts for when I ride to matches with my buddy.  His truck isnt as big so that would be perfect.

Loading blocks and strips can be a big help in organizing yer ammo but need to be carried somewhere when it's time to shoot. A pard who used to shoot hereabouts, before he moved to Texas, had one of the neatest tricks I've ever seen. At his cart, he would count his rounds into a bandana and carry them to the loading table. After loadin' his irons, the bandana was tucked into the back of his belt. When he got to the unloading table, he would spread out the bandana, shuck his empties onto it, pick it up and go back to his cart.
