Silhouette shooters data base
« on: April 06, 2004, 06:31:08 PM »
Hey guys,
I had a concept to create a "silhouette shooters data base" and post it on my site, what it would be is an info for other shooters looking for contacts in another provine , state, or country.
The post would include your name, or nick name, address, or phone or email, or all together - it is your choice.
for the phone please give your area code etc.
so what do you think about it??
and if you are interested please reply to private message.
I know maybe some will be reluctant  to post their info, but I think it might be a great waty of keeping together.
please let me know what your feelings
PS
by the way i would like to make a world wide data base so if you outside north America please snd the info

This is an interesting proposal.  A couple of questions have come up though after I have talked with others about this.

I guess a club had done this once before and somehow the database information leaked out, was hacked, etc. All the shooters names and phone numbers were given to anti-NRA organizations.  They proceeded to make these shooters lifes hell.

If this were to come about what type of security would be used? How would you be able to limit access to this database, to make sure the information was only available to shooters?

I personally think that this is a good idea. But having been building databases for a few years now, I am somewhat worried about the security of the users.

quick edit:
Shootingpaul,  I am not trying to flame you. I enjoy your website and find it a great resource.  Just thought I would throw in my .02

It is not difficult to identify many thousands of people who are active in the shooting sports and proud of it. I'm Alston Jennings, Jr. of Little Rock, AR. Anyone interested in finding silhouette matches in the central Arkansas area should give me a call or a pm. I'm skeptical of the horror story but that's irrelevant. I've sent my info to Pawel for the world to see, competitor and kook alike. There's someone, somewhere, who disapproves of every, single thing I do. And everything you do, too. The tragedy would be if any of us started to give a damn. If you like silhouette and think it's a good sport, help others if you can. Share the fun and don't sweat the small stuff.

sorry but there is no guarantee, your info will be displayed on my site for others to see, what I can promise you  is that i would never give your name to some spasm guys, but what ever is on the web - IT IS FREE TO GRAB,
what you can do is open an email account like hotmail or yahoo and give it as your contact.  what I had in mind is creating a data base were you would state your city and some kind of contact ### to you, so a new shooter or someone thet would be going your way could maybe contact you and chack your shooting fascilities , for example.

Once again what is on the web - is for everybody to see
Thanks

I think this could be a very good resource.  Maybe a suggestion for structuring it so it could be a little more secure.

You could create the database as you planned, however,  do not make this database available to the public.
From there, put a front end on it, through your web page.  This front end would allow a shooter to request information for other shooters in his area.  From there the request would be sent to the shooters in the database that match this shooters criteria. Then the shooters in his area could respond to the shooter.  This would alleviate a lot of the potential security issues.

I know that Graybeard has a forum that functions like this.  However, I don't think that it is used to its potential.
