Favorite 38-55 load?
« on: April 05, 2004, 04:56:56 PM »
We've got my friend's 38-55 target dialed in, and need to start loading some rounds. What is your favorite target load for this round? I'd like to load a 250 gr cast bullet at about 1100 to 1300fps. Any really accurate loads out there?

I had good luck with the Lyman 275gr. gascheck bullet and 11.0gr. Herco in my Browning 1885 for a smokeless load. Of course BP works great too, at the speed range you're looking for. Also an interesting one is WC860 or other super slow powder, duplexed on top of 5% 4227 or somesuch as a compressed load. Basically BP performance but smokeless clean with very small single digit SD's.

This case will shoot lots of powders very well. For the bullet you use at the speed you want, try 19 or 20 grains of Rl 7.
