I like 510g Buffalo Bullets with 110g  of powder.  That load will make a 6" group at a 100 yrds but it does drop a quite a bit at that range. At 50 yrds it is deadly.

I have three of them, all 54's, and they seem to like T/C Maxiballs with 100 grains of FFg Elephant for elk loads.  I have shot other charges 110 and 120 and the 100 seems to do about as well.  I have tried Maxi Hunters but they don't seem to group that well in my rifles with those charges.

Now drop the charges down to about 70 grains with longer Lee REALs and they touch in the groups.

TeamNelson, first of all I love to shoot my traditional sidelocks but I am a non-traditionalist because I choose to shoot sabot and bullets.  I couldn't tell from your post if you were interested in theses loads or not.  If you are not please just ignore and go to the next reply.

My favorite target shooting load from my Renegade is a Hornady 300 gr. 45cal XTP mag in a Nosler sabot.  I shoot loose T7, 90 grains.  It has amazing acurracy at a 100 yards.  During hunting season, elk season, I will switch from the XTP to a Nosler partition 300 gr. 45 cal Protected Point.  The group actually tightens just a bit with this load.  With either of these two loads, shots out to 150 yards are fairly easy - has to be the right shot, but with a rest a stationary target I really do have the confidence in these loads to take the shot.  I enjoy these loads and the guns so much I hunt all year with them, heck with the centerfires!

shooting a muzzleloader really is a blast

sabotloader: Nosler partition 300 gr. 45 cal Protected Point. how do you like them > I just pick up some for my 54 cal. thunderhawk they seem to load very easy shot after shot and shoot great.
I will be using them for the 2004 deer season in PA:

You will really like them,  I use them on elk and back off a bit to 260 grain Nosler HP's for deer.  There is no doubt in my mind the 300 grain XTP's would be very adequate, but I all the confidence in the world with the partitiion.  To often I have stripped the lead right out of the copper, but with a partition no concern.  I will post the recent results from a shooting trip with an inline in the next couple days.  I was shooting .458 (45-70) 350 grain RN bullets from a 50 cal A&H, 3 of the six bullets that I recovered mushroomed just like you would want.  3 others I found the copper was all mushroomed out, but no lead - the lead had continued into the sand pile.  Had it been an animal - it would have been dead, but if I were to shooting Noslers I know a majority of the bullet would have remained intact and continued to penetrate.

They also group great, I do not have ballistics on the Nosler from a sidelock yet, but from the inline I am getting great velocity across my chrono.

Good luck

sabotloader: what I found with the nosler sabots man they start with my thumb ,no starter hammer neened My thunderhawk in 54 cal. seems to favor 75 to 80 grains of triple 777 and pyrodex select 110 to 120 .I have read some great reviews on the nosler partitiion bullet ,Midsouth had a closeout on them a card of 10 rounds for $4.99 can't beat that price

lonewolf5347, that is a good buy on Noslers.  I normally buy a box of Nosler and then packages of Nosler sabots... It is quite a bit cheaper that way, but not at the price you are paying.

I discovered Nosler's what now seems like several hundred years ago when I was a centerfire hunter.  I used a 300 win mag and normal bullets, but at the velocities I was shooting them I was stripping the copper off the lead, thats when I made the move to the partician and have never had a problem.  They are just to expensive to shoot for recreation and target shooting - that's why I also shoot the 300 grain XTP's.
