bipod ??? for pdogs
« on: March 06, 2004, 04:13:22 AM »
Going to try a trip to p-dog country. Will a bipod get the line of sight (sitting) high enough to clear the grass/vegetation? The portable swivel benches look comfy but I think we'll go low budget once to see how it works. Any tips for a greenhorn? Does it pay to take a .22 lr?

Grizzlyguy,
Let me jump in here with my 2 cents worth, If you enjoy p-dog shooting
as much as i do you aught to make your self comfortable while you are doing your thing, Like trappenjoe says at least take a card table and a folding chair. It gets pretty tireing not having a place to sit and shoot. I would not even consider going without a place to sit, Maybe i'm just lazy but so be it. best of luck to ya, Joe

When I goes p-dog shooting I go low budget also, because of retirement and Social Security checks arn't very big checks.

I like to be comfortable also and spend all day in one area.

So I built a small take down shooting table out of scrap lumber, it cost me some time and about $10.00 to build.  I got a plastic pail that I sit on and carry ammo, sun screen, bug spray in. The plastic pail was free.  I build some x type shooting sticks out of old broom handles. Cost was time and material free.  Also for shooting rest bags I use mens tube socks filled with pea gravel. Pea gravel free and the  socks don't know what they cost as I got them for Christmas.

I also take a plastic cooler with water, soda, cheese, crackers, lunch meat for snacks when I take a break and rest my shooting finger up.

My biggest cost is gas to get to the shooting grounds and motel cost to sleep in comfort.

Ya take your 22lr along, because it is fun just to see how far out ya can reeach them with it and it is cheap to shoot.

Think low budget and have some fun.  :D
Happy shooting, may you hit what you aim at.

Oh, I forgot, also I scout around for FREE PLACES TO SHOOT. I won't pay some one to help control their p-dogs.  If they want money to shoot its bye bYe time.  8)

If you really want an affordable rest that will clear most vegetation see if you can find about four of the "static line" type tent poles from somebodys trashed out tent. We see them all the time at different camping areas.  Use two poles for each part of a set of cross sticks. In order to hold the two sides together at the pivot cut a short section of old garden hose and slip it over ....mine is just loose enough to move easily to adjust for height. Then I wrapped one end of each with a rubber tape putty and I am good to go. Its easy.....you can use it prone, sitting and even standing if the poles are long enough. I have bipods, tables, sandbags and a bench  rest type rest but the crossed sticks are the most portable...use anywhere rest we have.
Also built a shooting table out of a couple 2x4s and a decent pallet covered with a layer of some closed cell foam........the whole thing cost me less than $10 and we just leave it out at the farm.

If however you want a bipod be sure to get one that is adjustable from 13"-25" other wise they are very limited in their use.

I'm like MDick I go on the cheap too !! Won't pay to shoot prairie dogs or anything else for that matter.

I go out on my four wheeler and shoot across the handle bars. Great rest and comfortable seat to boot. Where I shoot PD's they are scattered, not in a "town" so to speak. So I cover a lot of ground from one group to the next. There are a few places, however, that I have to get off and climb up on some ledges so I always keep my Harris bipod with me. It works just fine sitting down. Just make sure you get the one that is adjustable so you can shorten one or both sides from the full extended positions. Don't find too many "level" ledges.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

It'll be a lot more fun if you use a bench of some kind. Depending on where you go, the bipod will be too low. A lot of the best spots have pigeon grass around and that's pretty tall.

Questor is right. If your going to be out there all day then you may as well be comfortable. Search the web for "portable shooting benches" and you'll find a few pictures to get ideas from. It doesn't have to be exravagant or expensive, just sturdy. The workmate table idea sounds like a pretty good one. Just make up some kind of top that can be clamped in the workmate. Generally about 40" long and 36" wide with a partial cutout where you'll sit will work best. A bucket or some thing to set on and your good to go.   KN

I like to sit on a metal folding chair. You can lean back on it between shots and they're amazingly comfortable when you're glassing for your next victim.  I don't think it has to  be ultra sturdy.  Even a folding card table will usually work.

The bench rest is a good thing but what I do is use shooting sticks and a shooting strap. The strap is wrapped just below your knees when your sitting and gives support when you rest your elbows inside your knees, with the sticks and strap you can hold very steady with a little practice.
