Is cleanshot worth trying?

I like the cleanshot as I have found it to produce less smoke when fired and it has made it a little easier for me to keep up with the deer when it is hit as far as the accuracy goes it is used by me much the same as the loose pyrodex, and the cleanup is the same as all bp no shortcuts in any of it., do a complete cleaning no matter what you are using.

Yes, except that it is no longer made. The company went under some time back, so any Cleanshot would be old stock. The new company is known as American Pioneer Powder. I'm still using up some of my old stock and it shoots accurately, and cleans with minimum fuss. My load in a T/C Firehawk is a 300 grain JSP .45 bullet in a .50 cal sabot over a 100 grain charge.

i just did a little test last week with cleanshot and pyrodex. I read where cleanshot goes bad after being opened a while. The newest cleanshot i have is 3yrs and the oldest is 5yrs old. the cleanshot had turned greyish-black in color. all the shots where out of the same gun and shot across a chrony. each can of powder had five shots taken out and a 230 .45 XTP/Hornady sabot used and 209 primer shot out of a .50 in-line. this is the results;

cleanshot (1) 100grn pellet- 5 shot average- 1663 fps
(this was the first pellet they made)

cleanshot (2) 50grn pellets- 5 shot average- 1925 fps

cleanshot loose powder 100grns- 5 shot average-1644 fps

pyrodex rs select 100grn- 5 shot average-1652 fps

I loaded 150grns of all but the 100grn pellet with same bullet/sabot and this is the results;

cleanshot (3) 50grn pellets- 2363 fps

cleanshot loose 150grn- 1869 fps

pyrodex rs select 150grn- 1936 fps

The accuracy of this bullet is not that great in this gun but i have a lot of them so used them. I did this to see if the powder had lost a lot of its power as i had read. from what i see it seems it still will work good.

Yeah. I heard the CS has a limied shelf life and also it is no longer made.
The 777 has a very long shelf life per articles i have read. I went to 777 this year and am very happy.

Flintlock loading note from Hodgdon:

Flintlock: To insure proper ignition in flintlock systems, 5 grains of FFFFG priming powder should be placed into the bore prior to loading the main charge of Triple Seven, Consult the loading data in this brochure to determine the proper charge for the caliber firearm used and the chosen projectile. The main powder charge should be reduced by 5 grains to compensate for the addition of the priming powder. While holding the firearm vertically, slowly pour the measured charge of Triple Seven into the barrel. Seat the projectile firmly against the powder. Make certain that there is no airspace between the powder and the projectile. *See WARNING below.

Last I heard after Hodgden (Pyrodex) sued for patent infringment and won. Results: pellets are no longer produced.
