375JDJ in 23" barrel
« on: April 01, 2004, 10:16:49 AM »
Anybody got any idea how much kick this barrel is going to have on a Contender rifle frame?  I figure at least 30-06 worth?

Any ideas how the velocity of the 375JDJ would compare to a 30-30 from the same length barrel?

I have a T/C JDJ in the bag if I want it, but aren't sure I want the recoil.  I'm thinking the the 30-30 might be just as good for deer hunting up to 125yds.

375 jdj barrels are avaiable from Midway

in 2 lengths 14" & 23" and encore (not sure of length) for $225 plus shipping. they come from fox Ridge as far as I know and are blue barrels.
A far cry from the price of a SSK barrel, but are they just as good?
I am thinking about the 23" as a rifle conversion for my contender.
375 jdj would make a heck of a rifle for hogs to say the least.

I ran some numbers for you through my Load From a Disk software:
Assume gun weighs 6 lbs
30/30 170 gr bullet 29 gr IMR 3031 Est MV 2100 fps is 11.8 ft-lbs recoil
375 JDJ 270 gr bullet 49 gr IMR4064 Est MV 2000 fps is 28.6 ft-lbs recoil

Gregory,
What does your calculator say for 30-06, 150Gr?  If the 375JDJ is higher than that, it would be a good kicker.
Thanks for the answer.

the 45/70 is more than enough for any critter in the US. the rest of my barrels I plan to stick to calibers that are fun to shoot. to me that is. I think a 6.5 in 9mm a 10" 38 special and a 14" 44 magnum. After that I don't know yet. Perhaps a carbine in 223 a 16"

I have a 20" SSK, it RECOILS a lot more then a 30-06, but it won't hurt you!  I think its a real hoot to take to the range as everybody wants to know what you are shooting when that little carbine goes off.  Just loaded up some 270gr. Hornady's this morning!

Simular to the looks you get when you show up ith a 45/70

handgun? Especually with those long cigar sized cases drop into the barrel.  Someday I will get a set of nickle cases to really show off, as it is those big 45/70s really get most folks attention when they see me loading them in a handgun.

The 45/70 will handle ANYTHING I want to kill with a handgun so really I have no use what so ever for a 375 JDJ nor its expensive dies and fireforming of the cases and losing sometimes 1 in 3 if the brass is brittle.

i've had my SSK 13" 375 JDJ long enough to know that I'd love to have it in a 20" carbine bbl, heck i'm getting 2250 out of my 13"er with 200 gr Sierra's over 54.3 gr of Accurate 2520! Or so J.D. says. and it takes little (125-150) lb S-GA white tail like Tank Abbot on a T-bone!

I have shot my 16" 45-70 as both pistol and carbine.  I love shooting it as pistol....as a carbine it HURTS.  I would have to think the .375 would be the same, IMHO.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :-)

I don't really like to shoot my Rem 700 30-06, but i love shooting 375jdj in 14" barrel.  I can handle the recoil of the '06, but it's fun...least ways not for me.  I think I'll get the 30-30 carbine barrel and keep the 375 in the handgun.

As far as the loading of the 375s, I've had no problems at all.  And they don't need fireforming either.  For what Hornady charges for commercial loads, I'll definitely reload.  You can reload 270Gr, 52Gr 2520 for less than $13 a box.  Won't take long to pay for the dies.

Good replies.  Thanks.
