I am getting ready to order a 270win. barrel in stainless for my new encore. I have been hunting deer with a ruger 270 for around 15 years and really like the caliber. I reload all my ammunition and would like to have a gun that shoots a MOA. I am considering buying from Fox Ridge or Virgin Valley. I really don't want open sites on the barrel. I would like to know what length rifle barrel is ideal for 270win and which company has the best chance of giving me a MOA barrel. I plan on using a factory composite forearm.

No doubt...if you want a sub MOA barrel VVGC is the way to go.

I have 3 barrels from VVGC:

22" 223 that will average .600" and the best was .290" 5 shots 100yds 40gr Nosler at 3624fps

26" 280AI that everages .800" at 3198fps with a 139gr Hrndy 5 shots 100yds

26" 22-250AI that averages .780" with the best being .440" with 60gr Nosler Partition...can't remeber speed

All of the barrels could do better but I use them for hunting only and liked the ballistics and performance I have gotten with these combos. I am partial to long barrels. For the 270, I would get a 26" heavy varmint contour.

From my experience, if they make that caliber in a stainless 26" factory barrel I would order one of them in a heartbeat and plan on getting MOA accuracy with it. I just have never had the accuracy problems that others have had from factory barrels so I would save the money and take what I consider to be a low risk chance. That is assuming the you want a 26" barrel which would be your only choice. The 26" barrels do not have sights.

I have a factory standard taper .270 (24") and it shoots just over MOA with little trouble. It spits most factory loaded stuff into 1.5" and I just started tinkering with some handloads and it is getting better. I have no doubt it is capable of MOA accurracy, it is just a matter of finding the right load for it. I thought about a 26" Fox Ridge .270 barrel but the whole reason I went with an Encore besides its versatility was how well it handles. I don't want to mess that up with a heavier barrel, the 24" standard taper barrel is pretty dang beefy compared to bolt gun barrels. Again this is just my preference. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks for the info everyone. I ordered a 26" heavy taper in stainless from Virgin Valley and a green laminated forend to go with it. I will have to pick up a matching butt stock at a later time. Hopefully, I will let you know how it shoots in about 10 to 12 weeks. :grin:

IMHO the ideal Encore .270 barrel is a 26" long STANDARD taper (0.75" muzzle). With the right loads 3200 to 3300 fps is attainable with 130 grain bullets. The .270 with the slow burning powders is one cartridge that really benefits from a 26" barrel. And in the Encore the overall rifle length is still less than most bolt guns with 22" barrels. The heavy taper barrel (0.85" muzzle) is really not necessary unless you just like the additional weight. Fox Ridge makes these for around $250.

Yes, the 26" standard taper is just about right IMHO. I feel the 26" heavy barrels are a little too heavy to carry all day for deer hunting. One has to remember that the standard taper TC barrel is still 0.75" at the muzzle! This is still heavier than most standard weight barrels on bolt guns. For reference the barrels on a Remington 700 measures 0.660" at the muzzle on standard and magnum calibers and 0.825" on the 700 varmint rifle. My Model 70 featherweight measures 0.550" at the muzzle.
