454 raging bull

i was thinking about getting one of these...but was wandering if the sound coming out of the ported barrel would deffen you....normally when you are shooting at a deer you dont even hear the sound or the recoil....but i was told it will still ring your ears...any imput on this gun would be appreciated

this old deaf geezer agrees with you a hunderd and ten percent.  I lost my hearing about 30 years ago around some bigger guns than you'll ever hal-ft to shoot, so give us old geezers a little slake.

ALWAYS WEAR JEARING PROTECTION.  I had to wear hearing aids for the last five years that I was working a patrol unit.  I could not hear any of the female dispatchers and all the loss was from shooting some bangers that were a little big.  I thought that I would not do any damage to my hearing,but it did.  Come to think of it,maybe some hearing loss on my part aint bad...cant hear the females whining about stuff.  Come to think of it,I think thats why I gots divorced in the first place.  All joking aside...ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTION,once they are borken,they cant e fixed fer crap,   King

I hunt with a 41 mag with no porting.  I'm STILL regretting being in too big a hurry last Sept and cranking off a cylinder full at a caribou.  I have noticed I can't hear near as well since - my ears hurt noticeably the rest of that day.  The 454 is more of the same. I'll be more careful in the future.  I hate trying to communicate with my Dad who can barely hear even with hearing aids - they just don't work for him.  I don't want to get like that - or I want to postpone it as much as possible.

the raging bull is a lot of gun for the money.  well built, great finish, smooth trigger and real accurate.  i tossed and turned trying to decide between the 44 mag and the 454 and when with the 454.  i love the gun but there are times that i wish i had chosen the 44,  as it will certainly do anything i need.  always use hearing protection while target shooting,  and if you can while hunting.  i took a shot this year without and although it rang my ears a little,  i cant say it was worse than some rifles i have shot.

I have 3 Taurus RBs. 2 in 454 Stainless, and 1 in .480.

I always use hearing protection at the range, so it's no problem.

I recently used my .480 and shot a hog with it.  My ears didn't even notice the first three shots.  However, on the last shot, which was to put it out of its misery, my ears hurt.

The porting from the RBs does not noticably increase muzzle blast.

I own a 6.5" Bull and a SRH both in .454. The bull is without a doubt louder! Recoil is lower and fps is right at 25fps slower from the Bull.

I'm not surprised that the RB has a loss of 25 fps, but not because of the ports.  Yes, the RB comes in 6 1/2" and 8 3/8" barrels, but be aware that the barrels are not grooved to the end of the barrel.  Thus, a 6 1/2" RB barrel is actually only about 5 1/2" long.  By comparison, the Ruger's groove goes all the way to the end of the barrel.

I am fully aware and was using that knowledge to point out that ONLY 25 fps was lost by the last 1.5" "combustion chamber". I was trying to point out also that the ports do increase noise level. ( I own and shoot both side by side both the Ruger and Taurus and 100% yes, the ports on the Taurus are louder) We were quite surprised to find that on every handload and factory load, the average lost velocity was right at 25 fps.

I'm a happy owner of a Taurus RB 6.5" in .454 Casull.  I can tell you as the other posts, this is great gun regarding accuracy, good looking,...

But we can't compare apples with oranges, I have also a FA 10" in .454 Casull.  The chamber are not made with same tolerance, recoil is completely different the Taurus kicks with full loads as a .44 mag.  Taurus RB is a pussy cat compare to the FA.  I wouldn't go with bullets heavier than 335 gr out my Taurus.  My FA is loaded with a 350 gr bullet LFN (mould from Ballistic cast).

I love my 2 .454 Casull handguns because there are completely differents.  Accuracy of Taurus RB is hard to beat, the grip of the RB is very good to absorb the recoil.  You can't go wrong with a Taurus, it worth the money spent for this great gun.
