ammo for 450 marlin 1895M
« on: March 10, 2004, 10:14:24 AM »
I recently aquired a 450 marlin and when I went to get ammo for it I found out that there is only one commercial round for this caliber. The Hornady 350 gr flat point. I am very dissapointed in this. Hopefully some one knows of another company that is making this round. There is nothing wrong with hornady its just that I like to have options. I called hornady and they said they weren't planning on making anything else for this gun and if they did it would be a lighter load. I didn't buy this cannon to shoot lighter loads. I was hoping they were going to make something over 400 grains. can someone give me some good news and tell me where to find differents rounds for this gun.

Bushnell Boy -

Although I've never used them, Conley has a good reputation.

looking at their prices, though, reminds e why I reload.

Give the Hornady ammo a try.   I was going to reload for my 1895 M, but when I used the Hornady ammo I was very impressed, I don't think I could improve on it any.

For what it's worth, the factory ammo is plenty for anything with a face on this continent.
If you did need a more powerful load for say elephant or rhino, then I believe that Garret  or Buffalo Bore is loading this cartridge to levels you would enjoy.
Worst case scenario, take up reloading.  It pays for itself in no time.

unfortunately neither garret or Buffalo Bore make ammo for the 450. Any other ideas?

I hope I didn't pull a Bestlever and post twice but conley loads some different ones for the .450 with two 400 grainer's.Check out reloading for the future goal.It really isn't that much to get started.

Had Mike @ Mike's Ammo Depot make some 300 grainers - they shoot very well.  Only made one box, going to have several more made.

On a side note, the 350 grain bullet seems to be the "sweet spot" for 45-70s as well as the 450 - I have both calibers and understand there are probably more than 20 factory loads for the 45-70, only one for the 450 - you could have the 450 loaded with any bullet that works in the 45-70 - they are essentially ballistic equivalents.

It's really to bad that more haven't jumped on the bandwagon for the .450 Marlin and get some choice for the shooters that don't reload.
Just my opinion.Jayco.

Nanook was the price reasonable on your custom loads

Paid $25, a bit high - only had one box made . . . planning to get a hundred soon.

Hey guys, we all like different calibers for different reasons but since the 45-70 and the .450 Marlin are loaded to be about ballistic equivilants why don't you just get a 45-70? I have one and it's great!!! Try to open your mind to a 100 year old cartridge that works, and it sure is fun too....<><....

Let me enlighten your mind, that I own two 45-70s - both 1895 LTD Vs.  My 450 (1895M) is more accurate.  I've worked with at least 8 different factory loads, and an equivalent to the 450 factory load and may get to the accuracy of my 450 someday.  I believe the short, stiff barrel on the guide gun virtually eliminates the hormonics of a longer barrel.  I am getting close to the same accuracy from my 45-70, but not as good.

Nanook, I agree with you about the short heavy barrel being inherently more accurate then a longer thinner one, with faster powders there is no need for a long barrel, especially if you are using a scope so the longer sight radius is not a factor. I reload and my 45-70 puts all my shots into one hole at 50 yards and on occasion has shot a cloverleaf at 100 yards but most of the time shoots a nice 1" or less group at 100 yards, if I do what I am supposed to, fine for what I use it for, a hunting gun. I know this a Marlin board and I love my Marlin 336SC in .35 Remington, would never give it up, I have had it longer than any by the manufacturer of my only 45-70, H&R. My 45-70 is a H&R Handi Rifle with a short (22"), heavy, stiff barrel, that may be why it is so accurate...I must admit I do like the tried and true calibers, I just see no need to just about duplicate their performance and rename them to sell some product. It's called merchandising....<><.... ( I do like Marlins also, my sons first deer rifle years ago was "a gun like Dad's", a 336 in 30-30, had his choice of sights, choose a Williams peep and shot a "BIG" (and I mean BIG) doe the first year he had it with one shot through the heart in a blinding snowstorm on Thanksgiving day in Maine about 18 1/2 years ago. Yes, Marlins have a warm spot in our hearts, it's just this single shot thing and these H&R's are so much fun to shoot and load for, of course, the 45-70 is one of my favorites. Nanook, If you like your .450 good for you, it's really no better or worse than our 45-70's, it's just that we were drawn to a different caliber for any number of reasons (don't let my undergraduate work in psychology get started here, you know what they say, a little knowledge is a bad thing!). Try reloading for that .450, I'm sure you will like it reloading. As far as your 45-70 goes, try 28.0 grains of 3031 behind a hornady 350 grain rnsp, accurate, easy shooting round, with little or no recoil to speak of, a sweet load in my gun... good shooting to you...

First off, I love the nostalgia of the 45-70, therefore, I have an 1895GS so that I can enjoy shooting them too.  I also have the 1895M and I reload for both.
In all honesty, they are essentially ballistic twins, yes, the wheel has been reinvented with the 450M, BUT, I also hate loading the 45-70 with that darned flying saucer of a rim on it.  The 450 slides in the gate much nicer and I don't get that nasty "rim pinch" as I seem to with the 45-70.
The 450 can also be loaded from mild to wild, so as far as I can tell, one should have both.
The way I see it, if you only have a couple of firearms you are essentially a hunter.  Anything more than that, you are a collector.

:D , Right you are RR, I don't have enough but have to many. Sometimes it's difficult to decide which one to load for or to shoot. Wish I could decide which to rid myself of, otherwise I may have to keep them all....<><....
