Nanook, I agree with you about the short heavy barrel being inherently more accurate then a longer thinner one, with faster powders there is no need for a long barrel, especially if you are using a scope so the longer sight radius is not a factor. I reload and my 45-70 puts all my shots into one hole at 50 yards and on occasion has shot a cloverleaf at 100 yards but most of the time shoots a nice 1" or less group at 100 yards, if I do what I am supposed to, fine for what I use it for, a hunting gun. I know this a Marlin board and I love my Marlin 336SC in .35 Remington, would never give it up, I have had it longer than any by the manufacturer of my only 45-70, H&R. My 45-70 is a H&R Handi Rifle with a short (22"), heavy, stiff barrel, that may be why it is so accurate...I must admit I do like the tried and true calibers, I just see no need to just about duplicate their performance and rename them to sell some product. It's called merchandising....<><.... ( I do like Marlins also, my sons first deer rifle years ago was "a gun like Dad's", a 336 in 30-30, had his choice of sights, choose a Williams peep and shot a "BIG" (and I mean BIG) doe the first year he had it with one shot through the heart in a blinding snowstorm on Thanksgiving day in Maine about 18 1/2 years ago. Yes, Marlins have a warm spot in our hearts, it's just this single shot thing and these H&R's are so much fun to shoot and load for, of course, the 45-70 is one of my favorites. Nanook, If you like your .450 good for you, it's really no better or worse than our 45-70's, it's just that we were drawn to a different caliber for any number of reasons (don't let my undergraduate work in psychology get started here, you know what they say, a little knowledge is a bad thing!). Try reloading for that .450, I'm sure you will like it reloading. As far as your 45-70 goes, try 28.0 grains of 3031 behind a hornady 350 grain rnsp, accurate, easy shooting round, with little or no recoil to speak of, a sweet load in my gun... good shooting to you...
