In a saboted bullet, what is actual caliber?  I've measured some TC hollow points and they are around .44 cal.  This brings to mind a question...  if bullets are .44 or .45 caliber and then they are placed in a sabot to bring them to fit into a .50 cal barrel, can .44 or .45 caliber bullets for handguns be substituted?  I am looking at the 240 gr. 44 caliber A-frame bullet.

Has anyone ever tried this?

TIA

SABOT - Early 17th century. Via French from Old French çabot , the source of English sabotage, a blend of savate  Â“old shoe,” of unknown origin, and bot  (source of English boot).]

 2. support for projectile in weapon: a sleeve placed around a projectile so that it can be fired from a weapon with a larger bore. The sabot drops away shortly after the projectile is fired.

You've heard the expression, "If the shoe fits wear it".... You might be pleasantly surprised at what you find....  Mine loves 240 grain MAG XTP's..... MTNMAN

I actually shoot a 240 grain .429 round nose lead bullet I mold with a mold from Lee. They shoot well and knock deer down.  I also use  a Sierra .429  240 grain jacketed hollow point in the same set up. It is a green Hornady Sabot with the bullet. I find the .429 loads much better than the .430.  Some of my friends use the same set up with a .429 200 grain flat nose lead bullet I mold also.  Both seem effective. So to answer your question yes most of the sabots use either a 44 or 45 caliber bullet depending on the sabot design. Buy the sabots in bulk and the same with the bullets.
