B&L 4200 elite 6x24x40
« on: June 07, 2004, 08:33:29 PM »
I have a great older Husquavarna 30.6 rifle and have been looking for a good scope for it. I currently have a fixed 4x german scope called a pecar which I think dates to the 60's ( any info on these scopes too?). I want to know if the B&L would be a good hunting scope.
Thanks

The Bushnell 4200 6-24X40 is a FINE scope. I have four of them.  It's a little on the long and heavy side but is a great target/varmint/airgun scope.

PERSONALLY, I think it would be a poor choice for a 30-06.  I'd much rather have a good 2-7, 2.5-8, 3-9, 2.5-10, etc.  Why would you consider putting such a high magnification scope on a 30-06?

I agree with Big6x6.  The Elite 4200 scopes are excellent scopes, but I would not put a 6-24 on it.  I would only consider it if I did a lot of reloading with smaller bullets.  I would go with the 2.5-10 or if you want a little higher power, the 4-16.

I know that many shooters consider the 3x-9x to be THE standard.  However, I personally like the 4x-16x.  Why?  Well, for my hunting applications, I really can't tell the difference beteen 3x and 4x anyway, but I certainly can between 9x and 16x.  Granted, I RARELY use 16 when hunting, but I love to have it when I go to the range.

I know that 4x-16x scopes generally tend to be longer and heavier and more expensive (and usually have A.O.s), but I personally prefer them to 2x-7x and the 3x-9x.

But I agree with everyone else...6x-24x is just way too much for a .30-06 for hunting.
