I have a new Taurus 460 AT LAST!!!
« on: January 30, 2004, 05:55:23 AM »
FEDEX just delivered the long awaited replacement gun for the Taurus Model 460 Total Ti .45 Colt 6.5" I bought way back on Nov. 25 of last year. Dang that took awhile.

I hope tho the wait will prove to have been worthwhile. There is a very slight beginning of a ring on the cylinder but it is very minor. Hopefully it will stay that way. Lock up is nice and tight on this one unlike the other. When you hold both hammer and trigger back this one has almost zero movement of the cylinder. Trigger is fine but action has a bit of gritiness to it. I'll take it down and clean it good and relube and expect that to go away based on my experience with other new Taurus revolvers.

I've not looked down the barrel to make sure it isn't like that first Model 44 was and haven't shot it either. That will come later. For now based on appearance I think maybe they've given me a good one this time. I sure hope so as I've really been wanting this gun a long time. Way longer than it has been made even. It's been a long wait but it is now finally in hand.

At this time I'm really too busy to take it out to see how it shoots. We're moving Matt's computer store to a new building. Been working some long hours and getting home near mid night getting it all to the new location. Still have a bit more to move today. Then we have to get the new store in order and get the doors opened. May be another week to 10 days before I'll be able to get it cleaned up, lubed and out to shoot.

Will I buy another Taurus? Highly unlikely. In fact I met a fellow at the store yesterday I hadn't seen in a long while. He has agreed to terms given to buy my RB454. So I'm actually already reducing the number of them I have. Plans are to keep the RB480 and the new M460 if it shoots as I hope it will. Matt totes my M85 most of the time. So I'll probably be down to four Taurus guns total in the near future and don't see it increasing again.

This has just been too much trouble and with two bad ones in a row it isn't likely I'll want to go thru this again any time soon.

Guess at this time I dunno. I actually already have way more than I have any real need for. Not sure what might develop later to cause me to buy something else.

Perhaps old S&Ws from before the agreement? I just don't really have any holes in my coverage at this time so don't feel any burning need for now to buy another anyway.

45 Colt Tracker
« Reply #9 on: March 04, 2004, 10:05:46 AM »
Greybeard,

Gald you got your new 45 Colt Tracker.  I'm a new member and posted my first question about loads for the same gun, above Sami spec, last night.  It is lengthly and detailed and I apologize.  Hope you can look at it when time permits if you haven't been able.  If I wanted to pose my question much more succintly I might simply ask what are you expectatons from the new Tracker 45 colt.  I suspect you will want beter than cowboy loads but less than Ruger loads.  What kind of bullet weights and velocities do you hope to achieve?  Were my expectations realistic.  Of course once you have some results I would love to see them here, and to see if you can recommend the Tracker in either steel or titanium (my preference) after shooting this one for a while.  No rush.  I love the sight and will be checking periodically.

Thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil. I've not yet seen the other post of yours. I'll respond to it when I come across it. Mean time I'll try to answer part of your questions here.

I have the Ti version and is really the only one I'd have any interest in. The steel version is really little if any lighter than my Accusports Bisley with 5.5" barrel and likely not as strong.

When I asked Taurus about the pressure levels it would take all I was told was it will take the Buffalo Bore loads for the FA97. That is those with the shorter OAL to fit the shorter cylinder both guns have in common.

My expectations for it are really fairly mild. I want to push a cast bullet of 260-280 grains to about 1000-1100 fps. That's really all I'm looking for from mine. I have a Ruger Bisley also in .45 Colt and an RB in .454 Casull if more is needed. There is likely nothing I'll ever hunt in my life time that load will not kill cleanly.

I have several molds I plan to try in this one depending on what will fit in the cylinder. I'm hoping my LBT 280 WFN will fit. If so that's likely the one I'll use. But I have another 6-8 possibles to try if needed.

Current cowboy action loads are really weak. Way below old original black powder loads which pushed a 255 grain bullet at about 950-1000 fps. That load is really plenty for most any hunting short of dangerous game. That's really kinda what I plan to reproduce but with a bit more bullet weight and velocity.

I have no current plans to shoot anything but cast bullets in mine and will try from 250 to perhaps 330 if they fit that short cylinder just to see how they perform. But in no case do I feel a need for more than 1000-1100 fps.

45 colt tracker

Graybeard,

Have you had a chance to play with the new toy (45 Colt Ti tracker ) yet or does spring have you too busy on the outdoor chores?  Hope evrything is going well.

An interesting footnote to the pressure question and analogy to 45 ACP cylinder dimensions.  Clark custom guns is converting S&W model 25's, also notorious for thin cylinder walls, to 460 Rowland by drilling the cylinder bores an extra 1/16 of an inch, so that the longer brass will seat  properly.  I asked how they could justify a pressure of 40,000 (higher than Ruger 45 Colt), in 45 ACP with cylinder size with the same footprint as 45 Colt.  They said they have fired hundreds of rounds through them in many guns with no problem and killed quite a few hogs, etc.   I have a call in to Georgia Arms who makes 460 ammo about this as well.  I mentioned it to S&W customer service who spoke to their engineering department.  Engineering thought that was very interesting, to say the least.  By the way, S&W also said that the tapered forcing cone area just forward of the cylinder is pretty thin in the 45s and can go before the cylinder.  Good to keep in mind.  I have a 460 Rowland drop in kit for my Colt Commander.  It is compensated and gives over 1300 fps with a 230 gr and over 1250 with a 250.  Great gun, but I have no experience with revolvers in this caliber.

By the way, John Linebaugh, in his gunnotes (from his site or sixguner.com link) says the S&W 45 can run up to 32,000 psi and he has fired hundreds with no problem but he recommends 25,000 for every day use.   He gives load data with 296 and 110.  I am hoping Taurus will tell me that we will be fine at 45 ACP pressures in the 460.   I have spoken to everyone there and they are asking Brazil.  Told them that one of the ammo companies might be willing to make  a factory intermediate load for Taurus  45 Colts if they say those pressures ore OK.  They said they wll get back to me.  I;m guardedly optimistic.

Also, Accurate Arms has a whole section on 45 Colt loads (their conservative Ruger loads section, at 45 ACP pressures, so we don't have to guess on pressures).  No. 7 and No. 9 look the best for breaking 1100 fps at 255 and up.  Check their web site.

By the way, I tried some of Paco's Kelly's loads (from sixgunner.com) at 45 ACP pressures in my Ruger (5 1/2 in.) and got the velocities he suggested.  296 gave the best hope of reaching 1100 fps or theareabouts with a 250-300 gr cast bullet.  I stopped at 15 grains with Blue Dot because I didn't know what the pressure is.  Didn't try 2400.  Titegroup didn't quite get me where I wanted.  It was fun trying it in a strong platform, worry free, first.   If I can learn here I won't have to try everything in the lightweight gun and batter it too badly, but can stick with the most promising and not accelarate wear.

Stay in touch.  I can't wait to see how you make out with the gun.   I haven't ordered it yet.  I think patience here will serve me well.

I'm getting more and more frustrated with Taurus, as this is week 8, that I've been waiting for my warranty repair return.

Looks like I may have to search for another hunting handgun.

They won't return my phone calls neither...
