Well..I finally did it..update
« on: March 24, 2004, 02:31:08 AM »
NEF recieved my Sportster action on 2/20/04..I recieved it back  by UPS yesterday, 3/23/04.
Now I have a Sportster in .22 LR, .22 mag and .17 HMR...
The long rifle and Hummer barrels cost me $138 including S&H ( and a new hammer spur)...
Although I bought my original .22 Mag Sportster at a gun shop, one could buy it from Wally World for about $110...
Going that route, one can have 3 very handy, brand new rifles for about $250....seems to me to be a good deal, anyway you cut it!

I have a 4X Tasco pronghorn on the Mag...put a 3-9X40 Tasco World Class on the Hummer, and a Simmons 2.5x20 shotgun scope on the long rifle.
The shotgun scope is a duplex only 7.5" long...this rifle intended for close-in, quiet work!
I plan on going down to the range in my woods this PM.

FYI...the Hummer barrel is a nice 22" bull barrel with a forward weight bias that really seems to "lay in there" for varmint shooting!
All three barrels have Weaver type rails, are nicely recessed, rather than crowned..per se.
    Will post further...stay tuned...

Congrats on your purchase...Pretty good turn around time too...I plan on purchasing a Ultra Varmint 22Mag and sending the receiver, forearm and the stock back in for a 17HMR barrel.  I just like the look of laminate wood and I want a 17 HMR so I figure that would be the most logical way to go about it.  Plus I don't have a 22Mag so that would be another piece of pipe for the gun cabinet...Too bad my ideas are bigger than my wallet or time provide.

Right Whitetailer;
Sometimes I wish I had popped the extra for the laminate..

Wanted to go to my range this afternoon...but the rain was not what I wanted on my new acquisition, so I just shot a few CBs from the long rifle barrel.
CBs are not ideal for accuracy testing...just getting it centered.

Had some help from my precious little grand daughter though...
check my post under... Marlin Talk, collectibles, handguns, etc ...where  Big Medicine   posts about "even my daughter knows".

Went to my range yesterday (Friday) to try my new .22 LR and .17 HMR barrels.
This, in spite of a constant drizzle...just couldn't wait longer.

Got set up and opened my ammo can (formerly .50 cal milsurp) and discovered that I had no .17 HMR ammo with me!

OK..so I go with the long rifle barrel....just couldn't get the scope to "settle in"; but I did fire enough groups to find a preference.
I had lots of variety... shorts, CBs, Rem subsonics , green tag, Win HV, PMC sidewinders, Rem Goldens, T-22s, Mini-Mags, Stingers, Velocitors etc, etc.

The .22LR barrel preferred Green Tag, T-22s and Mini-Mags.

Spent the evening drying out ammo and boxes..

  Will follow later...

Any input on "Blazer" .22 ammo? Stopped at my local shop yesterday to pick up a box of factory .280 and they had a bunch of bricks of it on special, did not see how much,  wasn't interested. But got to thinking, it must be better than the brick of American Eagle I have left to shoot. Anyone tried the "Blazer" .22 LR, is it accurate and is a clean burning ammo? Thanks....<><.... (talk about a "senior moment", I posted this as a reply instead of a new topic, oh well, here it sits and here it stays, perhaps someone out there will feel sorry for me and reply anyway...)

Re: CCI Blaser 22LR ammo:
I used it in a Marlin model 99 semi-auto with microgroove rifling and it was VERY accurate. I even used it for squirrel hunting after I filed off the noses of some to make an SGB (Small Game Bullet) with a Hanned Line tool.
I still have some and plan to try it in my as yet unfired Sportster. It'll be part of my range report then.

MSP Ret'

I've shot a boat load off CCI Blazers over the years. They are a good economical plinking round. Good accuracy & cleaner than Federal's value pack ammo which tends to gum up my 10/22 after a while.   The Blazers used to come in a green plastic 'ammo box'.

Finally arrived at my range yesterday with .17 HMR barrel on rifle AND some ammo.
The NEF bull barrel makes a sweet handling varmint gun! One problem though; I noticed that NEF sent a longer screw to hold the forestock on the .17 bull barrel than they did with the .22 LR barrel. I soon found out why!
with the longer screw, it left the forestock clearing the barrel slightly; when I used the shorter screw and pulled the forestock up more (it resisted some), the barrel would not lock up every time I closed it  because the tail end, where it meets and pivots on the action, tended to bind up!
Realizing this, I just use the longer screw and allow the clearance.

At the range, I had 2 types of ammo....CCI and Hornady. My rifle seemed to like Hornady, another  sportster may like the CCIs better.
My groups, at 75 yds were no "great shakes"   5/8" to 1", but still better than the same rifle with .22 Mag barrel.
On a day when I have had less coffee or am steadier for any other reason, I'm sure the groups will improve.

   I Used a Tasco 3-9X40 World Class....

Today, I  went out for woodchucks. I said hello to 2 of them , both at about 80 yards.

Just two groundhogs does not form a complete study....but here is my
very UNscientific opinion.
The flatter trajectory and more accurate nature, gives the hunter more confidence....and it is FUN to shoot!....But then, almost all guns are fun to shoot....
Actually that bull barrel on such a short rifle, just a hair over 38 inches, makes a very nice handling piece.
In both cases, I sneaked up on the 'hog from through the woods. With the flatter shooting round I felt confident about shooting through the small openings between the brush and twigs.

  One observation that I had...
Both were down, grazing when I hit them, one broadside, the other butt side.
Neither one killed stone dead immediately! The butt shot one I can understand... a rather unpredictable result can be expected in any case .

The broadside one, I took straight in at 90 degrees into the left shoulder.
Although he pitched forward onto his face, he wasn't " stone cold dead" and rolled to his back wheezing before he expired.
Chucks of the same size, that I have shot the same way with the .22 mag (1910 fps, 40 gr.), I believe were "deader sooner".

Contrary to what I have heard some say, I noticed little difference between the .17 HMR and the .22 Mag as far as recoil and noise are concerned...just me maybe..
If I were going for something bigger such as fox or coyote...I would take the .22 Mag barrel along. Just my $ .02...

Yet, the NEF Sportster in .17 HMR is a beauty for it's flatter trajectory, great accuracy and the sweet handling qualities the bull barrel gives.

For the $63 that NEF charges for the barrel ( $55 for the LR) makes them one of the best bargains in the firearms industry, as I see it!

BTW; I had my CZ Special along to my range yesterday. It is presently wearing a cheap,  4X BSA scope.
I fired it at the same 75 yard range using several brands/types of ammo.
high velocity, hyper velocity, standard, & target.
Best single group that day...3 shots...1/4" wide X .22 cal. high...
This was done with CCI Mini-Mag HPs.

I noticed Hornady (finally) has an updated website.  They are listing a 20 grn XTP bullet for the 17 hmr now.  Looks more like a standard hollow point from the picture but they are bragging about better Hunting performace with controlled expansion.    I guess time will tell.
I must be crazy.

Thanks for the update Ironglow...Sounds like you have yourself a keeper in that 17...I'm gonna get one for sure now.  I wish H&R would just offer that gun with the laminate stock.

Funny isn't it!  Trying to find just the right combination for a new rifle...
After getting the new .17 HMR where I wanted it, I urned to my other new barrel ...the .22LR..
Tried 3 or 4 scopes that I had on hand...wanted a compact scope, so I can carry the setup in a briefcase sized case. Found the Weaver rings were sprung, so I went and bought my favorites....MILLETS!
I put on a Simmons 2.5X20 shotgun scope(only 7.5 inches long) and went down to my little range in my woods.
I tried many different long rifle cartridges...had trouble getting below about   3/4" at about 50 yards. Suddenly I hit upon the right combo. Put out 3 shots...bing,bing,bing one ragged hole...
Surprise for many I know; but that little NEF barrel likes CCI Stingers!
  Imagine that!

I guess it is like many other things!  Some folks swear BY them and some swear AT them...

Ironglo, that is why I figure that the best advise I can give anyone asking "What ammo should I try in my _________?" (fill in the blank) I always say try as many brands, bullet styles and weights that you can beg, borrow and steel because you never know what your particular gun will shoot well.   How many times have you heard someone say Stingers don't group worth a darn?  I've heard it many times.

I too have heard a lot of negative comments about stingers but my pistol and 22 rifle seem to do ok with them. Not quite as good of accuracy of some but better than a lot i have tried. I also like the little extra velocity out of my 22 revolver. I don't have a dedicated home defense gun but the revolver is in the night stand loaded with stingers. :D
