Headless Horseman
« on: April 28, 2010, 11:35:34 AM »
When my father was about 18 he and 3 others went to camp in the Blackfork mountains one night. They had 2 tents facing each other and a fire between for warmth. They heard a horse coming up the road and figured it was a man that ran cattle in the mountains and poked their heads out of the tent. The rider comes into camp and dismounts then leads his horse to the fire. The horse dropped his head into the fire as if it were drinking and then the man re-mounts and they ride away. Needless to say the man had no head. They get into their vehicle and get off the mountain. They went to my grandfather's home and begin telling him what happened. My grandfather was raised within about 1/2 mile of where they were camped. My uncle, who was a couple years younger than my dad, started making fun of them for being scared of the dark and my grandfather told him to call his uncle, my grandfather's brother. My uncle called and told him what my father saw and he stated that he could remember when he was a child a man came riding by their house on a black horse and had no head. His mother, my great-grandmother, got a double barreled shotgun and emptied both barrels into the man who simply kept riding by as if he were unaware. The next day they went back in the daylight and followed the tracks. They went through fences, in one side of trees and out the other and several suspicious things. My father and grandfather told this story for the truth until the day they died and if you ask my uncle about it he says he does not know what it was but it was something strange. My dad was a preacher and a school teacher, my grandfather was retired from the Air Force, my uncle is now a doctor, one of the other campers is a doctor and another was a test pilot for the stealth bomber. I was with my dad once and we saw a horse running through the woods beside the road. He turned around and came off the mountain about 40 mile an hour on a road that would beat you to death at 10. I did not get a good look but he swears it was the second time he saw the headless horseman.

Strange and unexplained. It would be interesting to further delve into the history of the area. Years ago, my family and I were traveling through the South, our first experience with the southern states. We had a large coleman tent, and while passing through the Northern tip of South Carolina, We decided to camp overnight at a private campground, just inside the Tenn border. It was a nice place with a store, toilets and shower and a pond full of bream for the kids to fish. We sat in front of a late night campfire after a simple meal of hot dogs beans and s'mores, until sleep set in. All in our sleeping bags in the tent, sleep overcame us all. I had a terrible nightmare of a bearded man stabbing an old fellow, and I awoke with start, very frightened. It was 0600 or so, and I didn't want to wake anybody sleeping, so I headed off to see if the store was open yet, for a Sunday newspaper and a cup of coffee. Enroute, I met another camper, also heading for the store. I mentioned something about being an early riser, for small talk, and he said if it wasn't for that dream about 2 men fighting at a still, I'd be sleeping right now, chuckling to himself. We each described our dreams, and yes it was the same bearded man, stabbing an older fellow, but with the added info from the camper, "over a still".....come to find out, the area had a history of moonshine wars.

There was supposed to have been a shipment of Choctaw gold raided in this area. The wagons were found and many bodies but the gold and one of the guards was never located. So the story goes that the gold is hid and the headless horseman, the Choctaw guard, still guards it. I would like to find it but preferably while he was away on other business. ;D
