I have a Mauser 98 and want to order a replacement stock for it, how do you tell the difference between the small and large ring mausers and what does this mean?

First welcome to the military rifle forum.  A 98 is a large ring, a 38, 93,  95, and 96 is a small ring mauser.   An M48 action is a large ring but has a shorter length bolt so the reciever is a little shorter.     BigBill

The Large ring measures 1.400" while the small ring is 1.300" on the diameter.  Also on the Turkish  Mauser  while its a "98" sized action it takes the small ring barrel(threads).         BigBill

There is actually more than 2 different sizes,
so far I have 4
1.402 -  1.301 - 1.322- 1.328!
There are differences especially if the weapon has been Arsenal rebuilt.
Some of the threads are coarse and some are fine
on the receivers also. Late in WWI and
late in WWII there was not nearly as much detail
paid to quality in the arms plants of warring nations
and some really strange things were created.
