What are differences among double-barrelled flintlocks?
« on: May 02, 2004, 07:15:13 AM »
Moderator, I think this query might obtain better results were it in "Custom Rifles." What do you think?

What are the advantage and disadvantages among three types of double-barrelled flintlock mechanisms: swivel gun; over/under; and side-by-side?

Manufacture of over/under and side-by-sides appear to be reasonably uniform -- that is, there aren’t many ways to manufacture these barrels’ assemblies.

But swivel guns -- I’m aware of at least three different ways of creating the rotation-and barrels’ locking assembly. And there are almost certainly more -- Leonard Day, David Price, and a Muzzle Blasts article (April 1990).

Since I am gathering information from which to make a decision, any first-hand experience, using these or making these, will be useful for me. I would prefer to avoid “war stories” and opinion without experience, but I don’t want to cramp anyone’s style.

Naphalti,
Since you are asking for replies from experienced persons, I would post in every place I could get away with, as I doubt that there are many experienced with this sort of weapon.

I had a side by side 52 caliber percussion and found the rifle quite heavy.  In fact, I sold it as I didn't care to carry it in the field.  I did not have a problem with the left cap, but I would believe that a flinter would be a little different.

I thought about a swivel rifle but had heard that the rifle loosens up after a few years.

Best of luck with your endeaver,
